Oats Imports by Country

Chile reported 120,458 tonnes of oats imports in 2020 and 6.82 tonnes in 2024, one of the sharpest withdrawals among the former major buyers. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Oats, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 157 countries; 108 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 3.5 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for oats imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Oats Imports by Country in 2024

The United States was the largest oats importer in the 2024 listed data with 1,164,364 tonnes, followed by Germany with 510,040 tonnes and China with 470,341 tonnes. Spain ranked fourth with 193,036 tonnes, ahead of Belgium (167,806 tonnes), the Netherlands (162,867 tonnes), Mexico (124,575 tonnes) and Denmark (55,007 tonnes). The United States also led on import value at 345,464,000 US dollars, followed by Germany (174,753,000) and China (150,128,000).

Chile's near-total decline stands out across the 2020-2024 period: from 120,458 tonnes to 6.82 tonnes, a reported retreat of 120,451 tonnes, while the common universe as a whole fell only 263,909 tonnes. A single country's withdrawal accounts for nearly half the net decline, yet because both endpoints are reported values rather than blanks, the move stays inside the change arithmetic instead of being treated as a composition effect.

The United States holds 33.7 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 2.28 times Germany; the top three together hold 62.0 percent, the top five 72.5 percent and the top ten 85.2 percent. Europe buys in breadth, with Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy (50,548 tonnes) and the United Kingdom among them, while China held almost exactly flat at 470,341 tonnes and Mexico surged to 124,575 tonnes from a modest base.

Oats Import Shifts Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (103 countries with data in both years) fell from 3,631,925 tonnes to 3,457,433 tonnes, a change of -174,492 tonnes (-4.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,698,992 tonnes (134 reporters) and 3,457,504 tonnes (108 reporters). Mexico added 110,485 tonnes (from 14,090 to 124,575 tonnes, up 784.1 percent) from a small base, alongside Germany with 34,577 tonnes (up 7.3 percent) and Italy with 27,706 tonnes (up 121.3 percent). The United States fell 308,281 tonnes (down 20.9 percent) and the Netherlands 62,844 tonnes (down 27.8 percent).

Oats Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Across the 103 countries reporting in both years, total imports fell from 3,721,352 tonnes in 2020 to 3,457,443 tonnes in 2024, a change of -263,909 tonnes (-7.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,809,594 tonnes (139 reporters) and 3,457,504 tonnes (108 reporters); 36 countries reporting in 2020 (88,242 tonnes combined, led by the United Arab Emirates with 42,758 tonnes) did not report in 2024. China added 256,850 tonnes (up 120.3 percent) and Spain 78,480 tonnes (up 68.5 percent). Germany fell 100,321 tonnes (down 16.4 percent).

Methodology

What counts as zero matters more than usual in a thin table like this one. A reported 0 means a nil or negligible import flow was declared; an empty cell means nothing was declared at all. With that distinction fixed, the yearly reporter totals below sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for oats imports, 2020-2024, for quantity and for value. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars, unadjusted for inflation. The ranking and all shares rest on 2024 listed quantities. For oats imports, a zero is a reported nil or negligible flow, whereas an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Change calculations admit only countries reporting quantities in both compared years, while entering and exiting reporters are quantified on their own lines. Partner-sourced gap filling and food-aid additions may apply, and bilateral pairs are not fully reconciled, so an import record and its mirror export can disagree.
