Oil of Sesame Seed Production by Country

Nigeria stayed the fifth-largest oil of sesame seed producer while adding 27,386 tonnes and Myanmar added 25,400 tonnes. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Oil of sesame seed, 2019-2023, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 64 countries; 62 reported a 2023 quantity, and the 2023 annual listed total is 1,200,595 tonnes. The 2023 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

China and India run nearly level: 275,800 tonnes against 264,000, a gap of 11,800 tonnes. The pair holds 45.0 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 148,500 and 54,915 tonnes respectively.

Oil of Sesame Seed Production by Country in 2023

China was the largest oil of sesame seed producer in the 2023 listed data with 275,800 tonnes, followed by India with 264,000 tonnes and Myanmar with 148,500 tonnes. Japan ranked fourth with 54,915 tonnes.

China holds 23.0 percent of the listed 2023 total. The top three together hold 57.3 percent of the 1,200,595-tonne listed total.

Nigeria Adds 27,386 Tonnes as Oil of Sesame Seed Production Grows 4.1 Percent Among Common Reporters

From 2022 to 2023 the common reporter universe (62 countries with data in both years) moved from 1,153,684 tonnes to 1,200,595 tonnes, a change of 46,911 tonnes (4.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 1,154,891 tonnes (63 reporters) and 1,200,595 tonnes (62 reporters); 1 country reporting in 2022 (1,207 tonnes, Palestine) did not report in 2023, while no new reporters joined. Nigeria added 27,386 tonnes (up 129.1 percent) and Myanmar 25,400 tonnes (up 20.6 percent), while Iran fell 14,443 tonnes (down 60.7 percent).

India Adds 30,000 Tonnes as Oil of Sesame Seed Production Grows 0.7 Percent Among Common Reporters Since 2019

Between 2019 and 2023, the common reporter universe (61 countries with data in both years) rose from 1,192,398 tonnes to 1,200,595 tonnes, a change of 8,197 tonnes (0.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 1,194,001 tonnes (63 reporters) and 1,200,595 tonnes (62 reporters); 2 reporters present in 2019 (Palestine, 1,603 tonnes, and Panama, a reported zero) are absent in 2023, while 1 new reporter added a reported zero (Brunei). India added 30,000 tonnes (up 12.8 percent), while Tanzania fell 17,746 tonnes (down 77.6 percent) and Pakistan added 10,679 tonnes (up 730.0 percent from a small base).
