Olives Consumption by Country
Türkiye held 203,826 tonnes of olive supply in 2023, 75.3 percent of the 270,599-tonne total. The United States came second and France third. Per person, Türkiye also led, ahead of Montenegro, while the United States managed 0.32. Türkiye lost 968,302 tonnes in a single year. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Olives Consumption by Country: Key Findings
Türkiye had the largest reported olive food supply in 2023 at 203,826 tonnes, followed by the United States at 39,644 tonnes and France at 12,414 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for 94.6 percent of the 270,599 tonnes reported across countries with a 2023 value.
Türkiye had the highest per-person supply at 6.40 grams per person per day, well ahead of Montenegro at 0.97 grams and North Macedonia at 0.59 grams. The United States ranked second by total volume but recorded only 0.32 grams per person per day.
Olive supply fell 77.5 percent from 1,201,933 tonnes in 2022, a loss of 931,335 tonnes. Türkiye recorded the largest latest-year decline by a record margin. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten.
Brazil placed fourth at 6,345 tonnes and the Netherlands fifth at 1,446, with Mexico sixth (1,302), Taiwan seventh (1,117) and Kuwait eighth (675). The top three held 94.6 percent of the total, and Türkiye stood 5.14 times the United States. Per person, France (0.51) and Kuwait (0.38) followed Montenegro, with the United States at 0.32. Across the 63 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply fell 77.5 percent from 1,201,933 tonnes, a loss of 931,335 tonnes. Türkiye's 968,302-tonne fall exceeded the net loss, so gains elsewhere offset part of it; the United States added 21,746 tonnes and France 12,301. Brazil added 2,104 tonnes and the Netherlands shed 840. Among the 59 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total fell 75.4 percent from 1,099,612 tonnes, a loss of 829,021 tonnes. Egypt's 650,000-tonne fall made up 78.4 percent of that net loss, with Syria down 96,547 tonnes and Türkiye 92,212. The United States added supply from a zero base, while Mexico shed most of its 2019 volume. Five countries entered with 7 tonnes between them. Türkiye's 6.40 grams a day led the per-person table, ahead of Montenegro at 0.97 and North Macedonia at 0.59. France (0.51) and Kuwait (0.38) followed. The United States, second by volume, managed only 0.32 grams, while Brazil stood at 0.08. This page follows the SUA item labelled Olives and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten. Egypt reported 650,000 tonnes in 2019 and zero from 2021 onward. Syria fell from 96,547 tonnes in 2019 to zero, while Peru went from 16,107 tonnes in 2019 to zero from 2020 onward. These reported zeros are retained as values rather than treated as missing data. FAO lists zero for Egypt and Syria in 2023 after large 2019 values; zeros after large values are worth checking against the source. For olives, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 64 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; all 64 carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Frequently Asked Questions
Which country supplied the most olives in 2023?
Türkiye, with 75.3 percent of the reported total in 2023, ahead of the United States at 39,644 tonnes and France at 12,414 tonnes, with the top three far ahead of the rest.
How much did olive supply change between 2022 and 2023?
Supply fell 77.5 percent, from 1,201,933 tonnes to 270,599, a loss of 931,335 tonnes for human consumption, with Türkiye accounting for most of the decline.
Why does Türkiye dominate the 2023 olive supply table?
Türkiye held 203,826 tonnes, 75.3 percent of the total, more than five times the United States at 39,644 tonnes; no other country came close in either year.
Which countries had the highest olive supply per person?
Türkiye at 6.40 grams per person per day in 2023, ahead of Montenegro at 0.97 and North Macedonia at 0.59, among the 64 countries with a 2023 value.
Are the reported zero values treated as missing data?
No. A reported zero is retained as a value; only blank cells mean missing data. Egypt, Syria and Peru show zeros after large 2019 values.
