India reported 25,136,180 tonnes of dry onion and shallot food supply in 2023, 26.1 percent of the listed total. China came second at 20,973,126 tonnes and the United States third at 3,305,232. Per person, Tajikistan led. India shed 1,740,281 tonnes in the latest year, while Türkiye gained. All figures describe food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

India Leads a Huge Table

India led at 25,136,180 tonnes, 1.20 times China. The United States sat third at 3,305,232 tonnes, ahead of Bangladesh at 3,193,758 and Egypt at 2,957,727. The top three held 51.4 percent of the 96,140,150-tonne total, and the top five 57.8 percent. Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Türkiye and Russia closed the top ten between 1,829,954 and 2,118,348 tonnes. Of 170 countries in the file, 169 carried a 2023 value.

India Falls, Others Rise

Across the 169 countries in both 2022 and 2023, supply eased 0.7 percent, from 96,801,072 tonnes, a loss of 660,922. India shed 1,740,281 tonnes, down 6.5 percent, the largest fall in the file. Pakistan shed 363,325 tonnes, down 16.4 percent. Türkiye added 293,990 tonnes, up 19.1 percent. Iran added 265,230 tonnes, up 16.5 percent, and Egypt 248,222. China shed 215,495 tonnes. Mexico added 192,950 tonnes, up 19.5 percent, and Bangladesh 191,651.

India Adds Millions Over Five Years

Among the 169 countries in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 12.8 percent, from 85,212,457 tonnes, a gain of 10,927,693. India added 5,616,989 tonnes, up 28.8 percent from 19,519,191, over half the net rise. Bangladesh added 1,280,845 tonnes, up 67.0 percent. China added 871,933 tonnes. Egypt added 623,524 tonnes, up 26.7 percent. Indonesia added 565,440 tonnes, up 36.4 percent. Vietnam added 269,087 tonnes, up 74.5 percent. Nigeria added 282,385 tonnes, up 22.4 percent. One country was present in 2019 but had no reported value in 2023.

Tajikistan Leads Per Person

Tajikistan's 155.69 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Niger at 135.75 and Kazakhstan at 117.86. Albania and Algeria followed between 98 and 108 grams. Senegal sat at 85.34 grams. India, the volume leader, sat at 47.89 grams per person.
