Onions and Shallots Green Consumption by Country
China reported 825,602 tonnes of green onion and shallot food supply in 2023, 22.7 percent of the listed total. Angola came second at 511,804 tonnes and South Korea third at 388,895. Per person, Tunisia led. Morocco returned from zero in the latest year, while Angola added 487,868 over five years. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
The 2023 picture was shaped by a few large changes rather than a uniform rise across countries. Morocco moved from zero reported supply in 2022 to 42,168 tonnes, while Angola's five-year increase was large enough to exceed the overall gain among countries tracked in both years.
Key Facts
China ranked first in green onion and shallot food supply in 2023 with 825,602 tonnes, followed by Angola at 511,804 tonnes and South Korea at 388,895 tonnes. Tunisia had the highest per-person supply at 50.53 grams per person per day. The listed total reached 3,641,199 tonnes among 111 countries with a reported 2023 value. Angola's supply was more than twenty times its 2019 level, while Morocco returned from zero reported supply in 2022 to 42,168 tonnes in 2023. FAO food supply figures represent food available for human consumption, not necessarily the amount actually eaten.
China Leads the 2023 Table
China led at 825,602 tonnes, 1.61 times Angola. South Korea sat third at 388,895 tonnes, ahead of Ivory Coast at 252,000 and Tunisia at 225,036. The top three held 47.4 percent of the 3,641,199-tonne total, and the top five 60.5 percent. Nigeria, Thailand, Brazil, Türkiye and Mexico closed the top ten between 93,744 and 202,943 tonnes. Of 116 countries in the file, 111 carried a 2023 value.

Brazil sat eighth at 129,316 tonnes, shedding 71,197 over five years, down 35.5 percent. Türkiye, ninth at 98,347 tonnes, shed 22,571 over five years, down 18.7 percent. Mexico closed the top ten at 93,744 tonnes. Thailand, seventh at 157,807 tonnes, sits outside the per-person top ten. Nigeria sat sixth at 202,943 tonnes. South Korea, third at 388,895 tonnes, sat at 20.59 grams per person. Ivory Coast, fourth at 252,000 tonnes, shed 23,566 in the latest year and sits at 22.15 grams per person. Tunisia, fifth at 225,036 tonnes, leads per person at 50.53 grams. Tunisia's 50.53 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Albania at 42.35 and Angola at 38.16. New Zealand followed at 33.93 grams and Ivory Coast at 22.15. Paraguay sat at 18.02 grams. South Korea, third by volume, sat at 20.59 grams per person. For onions and shallots, green, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. Angola rises more than twenty-fold while Tunisia leads per person. The file holds 116 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 111 carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption.
