Other Meat and Edible Meat Offal, Salted, in Brine Consumption by Country
Brazil recorded the largest listed supply of other meat and edible meat offal salted, in brine, at 80,943 tonnes in 2023, accounting for about 24.5 percent of the listed total. The United Kingdom ranked second at 50,480 tonnes, followed by the Netherlands at 42,695 tonnes and Germany at 33,788 tonnes. The Netherlands ranked first per person, at 6.47 grams a day, ahead of Ireland at 4.57 grams. The 2023 total was 330,168 tonnes across 154 countries, of which 141 reported values. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
The three leading countries together accounted for about 52.7 percent of the listed 2023 total, with Brazil alone supplying roughly 24.5 percent of it. Brazil added 25,062 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 44.8 percent. Chile added 10,965 tonnes, up 94.2 percent, and Spain added 9,082 tonnes, up 59.6 percent. Germany lost 3,411 tonnes, down 9.2 percent, Czechia lost 1,567 tonnes, down 27.8 percent, and Belgium shed 952 tonnes, down 12.6 percent. The countries with a value in both years rose from 274,241 tonnes to 330,168 tonnes, up 55,927 tonnes, or 20.4 percent, with Jamaica leaving the comparison and none arriving. Between 2019 and 2023, the 135 countries with a value in both years rose from 313,624 tonnes to 330,152 tonnes, up 16,528 tonnes, or 5.3 percent. This shared-set total sits 16 tonnes below the full 2023 figure, which covers every country with a 2023 value. Spain recorded the largest increase, adding 14,649 tonnes, up 151.5 percent. Chile added 11,534 tonnes, up 104.2 percent, and the United Kingdom added 10,825 tonnes, up 27.3 percent. France recorded the largest decline, falling from 22,160 tonnes to a reported zero. Brazil lost 9,524 tonnes, down 10.5 percent, and Georgia shed 3,254 tonnes, down 96.1 percent. Six countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while thirteen left it. The Netherlands recorded 6.47 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Ireland at 4.57 grams in second and Botswana at 4.37 grams in third. Chile sat fourth at 3.15 grams. The Netherlands therefore ranks first per person, although its margin over Ireland is about two-fifths rather than a multiple. Other meat and edible meat offal, salted, in brine, dried or smoked, available for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size. Twenty-two countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including France, which fell from 22,160 tonnes in 2019, so that change warrants a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the thirteen rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply. The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 records food supply in tonnes, while element 665 reports food supply in grams per capita per day, for other meat and edible meat offal, salted, in brine, over 2019-2023. The annual listed total sums countries with reported values for the relevant year. Of the 154 country rows, 141 reported a value in 2023 and 119 of those were above zero. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries with reported values in both years, which gives 141 countries for 2022-2023 and 135 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not actual dietary intake.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the highest salted meat and offal supply per person?
The Netherlands ranked first in 2023 at 6.47 grams per person per day, followed by Ireland at 4.57 grams and Botswana at 4.37 grams overall.
Does Brazil also lead in per-capita supply?
No. Brazil had the largest total supply at 80,943 tonnes, but its per-capita figure was 1.05 grams per day, while the Netherlands ranked first on a per-person basis.
Why is the 2023 total different from the five-year comparison total?
The annual total includes all countries with reported 2023 values, while the five-year comparison includes only countries with values in both 2019 and 2023, so the two figures cover different sets of countries.
Do these figures measure actual meat consumption?
No. They measure food available for human consumption in FAO's supply accounts, rather than the quantity people actually ate, so they describe availability rather than intake.
Why can a country have a reported value of zero?
A reported zero is distinct from a blank cell, which indicates missing data, and a zero should be read as the value recorded in the dataset rather than automatic proof that no food was consumed.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
