Snails, Fresh, Chilled, Frozen, Dried, Salted or in Brine, Except Sea Snails Consumption by Country
Morocco recorded the largest reported snail food supply in 2023, at 9,672 tonnes, accounting for about 35.1 percent of the listed total. Spain ranked second at 8,770 tonnes, followed by Portugal at 2,135 tonnes. Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded the highest reported supply per person, at 1.28 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 27,564 tonnes, and 100 of the 114 country rows reported a value for that year, 75 of them above zero. The figures cover snails other than sea snails and measure food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
France placed fourth by volume at 1,538 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 74.6 percent of the listed 2023 total. Spain lost 1,218 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 12.2 percent. Taiwan lost 236.75 tonnes, down 83.2 percent, to 47.75 tonnes, and Italy shed 193.75 tonnes, down 19.4 percent. Morocco added 1,784 tonnes, up 22.6 percent, France added 265 tonnes, and Bosnia and Herzegovina added 258 tonnes, up 21.0 percent. The 95 countries with a value in both years rose from 26,701 tonnes to 27,494 tonnes, up 793 tonnes, or 3.0 percent, with five countries joining the comparison, led by Romania at 61.07 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 78 countries with a value in both years fell from 29,919 tonnes to 27,429 tonnes, down 2,490 tonnes, or 8.3 percent. China recorded the largest decline, losing 3,272 tonnes, down 97.0 percent. Spain shed 2,557 tonnes, down 22.6 percent, and Taiwan gave up 382.25 tonnes, down 88.9 percent. Morocco added 3,321 tonnes, up 52.3 percent, Bosnia and Herzegovina added 622.52 tonnes, and Greece added 235.24 tonnes. Twenty-two countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while twelve left it. Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded 1.28 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Morocco at 0.70 grams in second and Portugal at 0.56 grams in third. Spain sat fourth at 0.50 grams. These figures express the quantity available for human consumption per person, not individual dietary intake. Snails for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size. Twenty-five countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including Slovakia, which fell from 84.71 tonnes in 2022, so that drop warrants a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the fourteen rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply. The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for snails, fresh, chilled, frozen, dried, salted or in brine, except sea snails, over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 114 country rows, 100 reported a value in 2023 and 75 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 95 countries for 2022-2023 and 78 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the highest snail food supply in 2023?
Morocco ranked first at 9,672 tonnes, followed by Spain at 8,770 tonnes and Portugal at 2,135 tonnes, which together made up most of the listed total.
Which country ranked first per person?
Bosnia and Herzegovina ranked first at 1.28 grams per person per day, ahead of Morocco at 0.70 grams and Portugal at 0.56 grams in the reported 2023 figures.
How did the reported supply in Spain change in 2023?
Spain lost 1,218 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 12.2 percent, which was the largest decline by tonnage among the countries included in that comparison.
Does food supply measure actual consumption?
No. The figures record the quantity available for human consumption, so they describe national availability rather than the amount individuals actually ate in each country.
How did the listed total change between 2019 and 2023?
Among the 78 countries with reported values in both years, the shared total fell from 29,919 tonnes to 27,429 tonnes, a decline of 2,490 tonnes, or 8.3 percent.
