Key Takeaways

In 2023, Nigeria had the largest listed supply of other roots at 3,368 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 1,559 thousand tonnes. Ethiopia ranked third with 1,176 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, Namibia recorded the highest food supply at 97.57 kilograms per person per year, followed by Samoa at 89.16 kilograms.

Across the 121 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, listed other roots supply increased by 154 thousand tonnes, or 1.1 percent. Ethiopia contributed 213 thousand tonnes of that increase, more than the net gain, while Liberia recorded the largest decline at 71 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other roots actually eaten.

Other Roots Consumption by Country in 2023

Nigeria had the largest listed food supply of other roots in the 2023 data with 3,368 thousand tonnes (24.7 percent of the listed total), followed by China with 1,559 thousand tonnes (11.4 percent) and Ethiopia with 1,176 thousand tonnes (8.6 percent). Ghana ranked fourth with 1,099 thousand tonnes and Cameroon fifth with 910 thousand tonnes.

The top three reporters hold 44.8 percent of the listed 2023 total, the top five 59.5 percent and the top ten 77.9 percent of the 13,635-thousand-tonne total. Nigeria alone accounts for nearly a quarter of the listed total.

Ethiopia Adds 213 Thousand Tonnes as Other Roots Food Supply Grows 1.1 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 121 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 13,481 thousand tonnes to 13,635 thousand tonnes, a gain of 154 thousand tonnes (1.1 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 13,481 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 13,635 thousand tonnes in 2023, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Ethiopia added 213 thousand tonnes (up 22.1 percent), accounting for 138.3 percent of the net increase, followed by Pakistan with 68 thousand tonnes (up 16.1 percent) and Nigeria with 54 thousand tonnes (up 1.6 percent), while Liberia fell 71 thousand tonnes (down 72.4 percent), Cameroon fell 27 thousand tonnes (down 2.9 percent), Saudi Arabia fell 22 thousand tonnes (down 75.9 percent), China fell 19 thousand tonnes (down 1.2 percent) and Nicaragua fell 17 thousand tonnes (down 70.8 percent).

Nigeria Adds 1,955 Thousand Tonnes as Other Roots Food Supply Grows 16.9 Percent Since 2019

For the 120 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 11,653 thousand tonnes to 13,628 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,975 thousand tonnes (16.9 percent). The 2019 total includes 121 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 121; Cuba, with 98 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Vietnam entered with 7 thousand tonnes. Nigeria added 1,955 thousand tonnes (up 138.4 percent), accounting for 99.0 percent of the increase, followed by Ethiopia with 272 thousand tonnes (up 30.1 percent), Pakistan with 161 thousand tonnes (up 48.8 percent) and Ghana with 70 thousand tonnes (up 6.8 percent), while DR Congo fell 296 thousand tonnes (down 27.7 percent), Cameroon fell 130 thousand tonnes (down 12.5 percent), Indonesia fell 96 thousand tonnes (down 23.9 percent) and the United States fell 62 thousand tonnes (down 50.0 percent).

Nigeria accounts for most of the five-year increase: its 1,955-thousand-tonne gain is 99.0 percent of the common-reporter increase, while Ethiopia, Pakistan and Ghana add 503 thousand tonnes between them, DR Congo, Cameroon, Indonesia and the United States subtract 584 thousand tonnes, and smaller movements elsewhere add a net 101 thousand tonnes. The per-capita ranking looks nothing like the totals ranking: Namibia records 97.57 kilograms per year from 289 thousand tonnes and Samoa 89.16 from 19 thousand tonnes, while Nigeria, which leads the total, records 14.78 kilograms.

What Does Other Roots Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the Roots, Other figure used here is the amount recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much other roots people actually ate. The item is a residual category covering roots and tubers not recorded under their own items, so it excludes potatoes, sweet potatoes and cassava.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, Nigeria had the largest listed food supply of other roots at 3,368 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 1,559 thousand tonnes and Ethiopia at 1,176 thousand tonnes. Namibia had the highest per-capita food supply at 97.57 kilograms per person per year. The dataset contains 122 reporters in the five-year series, with 121 reporting a value for 2023. The figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Food Balances and are not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Roots, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 122 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 13,635 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 121 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the largest other roots food supply?

Nigeria had the largest listed other roots food supply in 2023 with 3,368 thousand tonnes, which is 2.16 times China's 1,559 thousand tonnes. Nigeria's share of the 13,635-thousand-tonne listed total was 24.7 percent.

Why did Nigeria add 1,955 thousand tonnes since 2019?

Nigeria rose from 1,413 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 3,368 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 1,955 thousand tonnes (up 138.4 percent). That gain accounts for 99.0 percent of the 1,975-thousand-tonne increase across reporters with data in both years.

Is other roots food supply the same as other roots eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
