Other Starchy Roots Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record edible roots and tubers with high starch or inulin content, not elsewhere classified, available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 119 reporters; 117 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 2,747,008 tonnes. DR Congo holds the largest 2023 supply — yet the five-year total moved 6,194 tonnes, as Pakistan's rise met DR Congo's fall and Vanuatu's collapse in reported supply.
DR Congo reported the largest 2023 supply at 707,700 tonnes, while Namibia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 267.32 grams per person per day. DR Congo's 707,700 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 25.8 percent of the listed total, 1.44 times Pakistan's 491,404 in second. Namibia follows at 289,115 with Peru at 214,107; the top three hold 54.2 percent, the top five 67.1 percent and the top ten 82.5 percent. Mexico, Nepal, Botswana, Colombia, Guinea-Bissau and Sri Lanka complete the ten. Per person, Namibia stands first at 267.32 grams — third by volume and first per person — while DR Congo sits outside the per-person ten at 18.33 grams; Eswatini, Bhutan, Botswana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Guinea-Bissau follow Namibia. The common total moved from 2,751,595 tonnes to 2,745,401, down 6,194 tonnes or 0.2 percent across 113 reporters. Pakistan added 161,163 tonnes (up 48.8 percent) while DR Congo lost 113,045 (down 13.8 percent); Vanuatu fell 52,997 tonnes (down 100.0 percent) to 3.47 tonnes, with Nepal down 21,530 (down 13.9 percent) and Venezuela down 13,805 (down 24.3 percent); Namibia added 14,786 (up 5.4 percent) while Mexico fell 13,292 (down 8.6 percent), and Colombia added 12,088 (up 21.7 percent). Two reporters left at zero; four entered with 1,607 tonnes between them. The common total rose from 2,649,035 tonnes to 2,747,008, up 97,973 tonnes or 3.7 percent across 117 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Pakistan added 68,888 tonnes (up 16.3 percent), with Mexico adding 13,110 (up 10.3 percent), Colombia 9,614 (up 16.5 percent), Peru 6,125 (up 2.9 percent) and Sri Lanka 5,000 (up 8.8 percent); Uganda fell 5,767 (down 78.4 percent), with Nepal down 3,723 (down 2.7 percent) and the United States down 3,539 (down 41.6 percent). The FAO item gathers edible roots and tubers with high starch or inulin content that fit no other item — a residual basket, not a single crop. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. DR Congo had the largest 2023 listed supply at 707,700 tonnes, while Namibia had the highest per-capita figure at 267.32 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 2,747,008 tonnes across 117 reporters, down 0.2 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. A 119-reporter universe sits behind the tables: every reporter with a value in any year from 2019 through 2023, reporters only, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows excluded and China standing for the China reporter. Percentages take the earlier endpoint year as their base across reporters present in both years; zero-base years produce no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base in view. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, follows this residual item over 2019-2023. The object counted is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. Zero reports zero and blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 2,747,008 tonnes sums the 117 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the total barely move in five years?
Pakistan added 161,163 tonnes while DR Congo lost 113,045 and Vanuatu 52,997, leaving a 6,194-tonne net decrease. The figures record the offset, not what caused each side.
What happened to Vanuatu?
Vanuatu reported 53,000 tonnes in 2019 and 3.47 tonnes in 2023, a fall of 52,997 tonnes (down 100.0 percent). The figures trace the fall, not what caused it.
Does DR Congo dominate per person too?
No: DR Congo records 18.33 grams a day per person, outside the per-person ten, against Namibia's 267.32. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
