Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 881,535 thousand tonnes to 892,346 thousand tonnes, a gain of 10,811 thousand tonnes (1.2 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 6,568 thousand tonnes (up 1.3 percent), Iran added 2,088 thousand tonnes (up 71.2 percent), India added 1,805 thousand tonnes (up 2.0 percent), Mexico added 1,554 thousand tonnes (up 40.9 percent), Vietnam added 1,210 thousand tonnes (up 7.0 percent) and Algeria added 877 thousand tonnes (up 14.5 percent), while the United States fell 1,307 thousand tonnes (down 4.3 percent) and Iraq fell 799 thousand tonnes (down 33.4 percent).

Five-Year Change: China Accounts for 60.6 Percent of the Net Increase

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 847,026 thousand tonnes to 892,346 thousand tonnes, a gain of 45,320 thousand tonnes (5.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 1,399 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 27,486 thousand tonnes (up 5.7 percent), India added 5,201 thousand tonnes (up 6.1 percent), Vietnam added 2,384 thousand tonnes (up 14.8 percent), Bangladesh added 1,210 thousand tonnes (up 29.8 percent), Pakistan added 1,127 thousand tonnes (up 31.8 percent), Algeria added 895 thousand tonnes (up 14.9 percent) and Zimbabwe added 865 thousand tonnes (up 157.3 percent), while Russia fell 1,208 thousand tonnes (down 11.0 percent).

China's gain is worth 60.6 percent of the five-year net increase, with India adding 11.5 percent. Iran's path runs 5,359 to 2,934 to 5,022 thousand tonnes across 2019, 2022 and 2023. Per capita, China's 357.60 kilograms lead Croatia at 288.62 kilograms.

A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Other Vegetables Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Vegetables, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic.
