Vegetables Preserved N.E.S. Consumption by Country

China had the largest reported food supply of preserved vegetables not elsewhere specified (n.e.s.) in 2023, at 1,178,521 tonnes, representing 19.2 percent of the listed total. Algeria ranked second at 840,558 tonnes, followed by South Korea at 416,681 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Algeria led at 49.88 grams per person per day, ahead of Taiwan at 44.53 grams. From 2019 to 2023, the listed total increased by 19.0 percent, with Algeria contributing more than half of the net increase. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

China Leads Total Supply

China led at 1,178,521 tonnes, 1.40 times Algeria. South Korea ranked third at 416,681 tonnes, ahead of Taiwan at 378,993 and Germany at 342,603. The top three held 39.6 percent of the 6,144,262-tonne total, and the top five 51.4 percent. The United States, India, the United Kingdom, France and the Philippines closed the top ten between 113,831 and 333,119 tonnes. Of 177 countries in the file, 176 carried a 2023 value.

U.S. Supply Falls as France Gains

Across the 176 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, the combined reported total increased 3.6 percent, from 5,928,152 tonnes, a gain of 216,110. The United States fell by 87,134 tonnes, down 20.7 percent, the largest decline. France added 54,157 tonnes, up 36.5 percent. India added 52,507 tonnes, up 19.9 percent. South Korea added 50,940 tonnes, up 13.9 percent. Yemen fell by 44,820 tonnes, down 55.6 percent. Peru added 35,142 tonnes from 4,249. The Netherlands reported 29,555 tonnes in 2023, compared with zero in 2022.

Algeria Drives the Five-Year Increase

Among the 175 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, the combined total grew 19.0 percent, from 5,164,953 tonnes, a gain of 979,309. Algeria's reported supply rose from 310,421 tonnes in 2019 to 840,558 tonnes in 2023, reaching 2.7 times its earlier level. The United Kingdom added 126,115 tonnes, nearly doubling from 129,297. The United States added 107,633 tonnes, up 47.7 percent. Tanzania fell by 76,261 tonnes, down 84.0 percent. India added 73,123 tonnes. Cuba reported 67,332 tonnes in 2019 with no later values, while Bhutan first reported a zero in 2023.

Taiwan Ranks Fourth by Total Supply

Taiwan ranked fourth at 378,993 tonnes and second per person. Germany, fifth at 342,603 tonnes, sits outside the per-person top ten. South Korea, third by volume, reported 22.06 grams per person, while China, the volume leader, reported 2.27 grams.

U.K. Supply Nearly Doubles

The United Kingdom ranked eighth at 255,412 tonnes, adding 126,115 over five years, nearly doubling from 129,297. France, ninth at 202,469 tonnes, added 54,157 in the latest year. The Philippines closed the top ten at 113,831 tonnes.

Algeria Leads Per-Person Supply

Algeria's 49.88 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Taiwan at 44.53 and French Polynesia at 27.81. Luxembourg followed at 23.62 grams and Djibouti at 22.59. Total tonnage and per-person figures describe different measures: the first reflects overall volume, the second adjusts for population.
