Peat Production by Country
Peat production by country measures how much peat each country produces, expressed in thousand metric tons. Peat is an organic material formed from partly decomposed plant matter in waterlogged conditions, mined for use as fuel, in horticulture, and as a soil additive. The statistics are based on USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table below lists 11 countries with 2024 and 2025 data available for all of them. The United States figures are withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.
Finland produced the most peat in 2025 with 2,500 thousand metric tons. Canada ranked second with 2,000, followed by Latvia (2,000), Belarus (1,800), Russia (1,800), Sweden (1,800), Estonia (1,100), Poland (890), Germany (830), Lithuania (540), and Ukraine (450). Among the 11 countries with available 2025 data, Finland accounted for about 16 percent of the reported production values, and Finland and Canada together accounted for about 29 percent. No country produced more than 2,500 thousand metric tons in 2025. In Europe, Finland (2,500 thousand metric tons) is the largest producer, ahead of Latvia (2,000), Belarus (1,800), Russia (1,800), Sweden (1,800), Estonia (1,100), Poland (890), Germany (830), and Lithuania (540). Ukraine (450) is the smallest European producer listed. In North America, Canada (2,000) is the only listed producer, while the United States figures are withheld. Peat production is relatively even at the top of the list: the leading producers are all between 1,800 and 2,500 thousand metric tons, a spread of less than 40 percent across the top six. No country dominates the way in other mineral pages. The data shows a broad plateau rather than a single concentration. Canada recorded the largest increase, rising from 1,760 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 2,000 in 2025 (up 240). Lithuania rose from 457 to 540 (up 83), and Poland from 886 to 890 (up 4). Latvia recorded the largest decline, falling from 2,700 to 2,000 (down 700), followed by Russia (2,000 to 1,800, down 200), Estonia (1,260 to 1,100, down 160), Germany (990 to 830, down 160), Belarus (1,900 to 1,800, down 100), Finland (2,590 to 2,500, down 90), and Sweden (1,890 to 1,800, down 90). Ukraine held 450 thousand metric tons in both years. Total reported production among the 11 listed countries declined from 16,883 thousand metric tons in 2024 to 15,710 in 2025, a decrease of 1,173 thousand metric tons, or about 6.9 percent. The decline was broad-based: seven of the eleven countries reported lower output, and only three increased. Latvia's fall of 700 thousand metric tons alone explains about 60 percent of the net decrease.
