Peat Reserves by Country

Six of the eight countries reporting peat reserves have recorded the same figure in every year from 2018 through 2025. The data come from eight editions of the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries (2019-2026), covering estimated quantities of peat classified as reserves. Listed reserves totaled 11,400,000 thousand metric tons in 2025, while USGS reports another 1,400,000 under Other countries. The rounded world total is 13,000,000 thousand metric tons.

Finland (6,000,000 thousand metric tons) leads Belarus (2,600,000), with the pair holding about 75.4% of the listed total between them. Russia (1,000,000) is third, while the other five countries account for 15.8% of the listed total.

Six countries show no change across the series

All eight reported 2025 values match 2024 exactly. Finland, Belarus, Russia, Canada (720,000), Lithuania (210,000) and the United States (150,000) have reported identical figures in all eight years shown — six stable series covering 10,680,000 thousand metric tons, or about 93.7% of the listed total.

The only historical changes

Estonia reported 59,000 thousand metric tons in 2020, then 570,000 for 2021 — nearly a tenfold rise — and has held that figure ever since. Latvia changed from 150,000 to 230,000 in 2019, then to 220,000 in 2020 before returning to 150,000 in 2021. No other country changed during the 2018-2025 period.

Methodology

Figures come from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026. The 2025 reserve figures are those reported in the 2026 edition. Units are thousand metric tons, exactly as reported. Blank entries indicate that the source reported no value; they are not zeroes. The source's world total is rounded, so shares are computed against the sum of the listed countries. For this series the published world total is 13,000,000 thousand metric tons. Reserves and production are different measures and should not be combined without equalizing units.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are peat reserves?

Peat reserves are estimated quantities of peat that can be economically extracted under applicable conditions, in thousand metric tons. Production measures the amount mined in a year.

Which countries hold the most peat reserves?

Finland (6,000,000 thousand metric tons) and Belarus (2,600,000) reported the largest 2025 values, followed by Russia (1,000,000).

Which peat reserves have stayed unchanged since 2018?

Finland, Belarus, Russia, Canada, Lithuania and the United States reported identical figures in all eight years shown, covering 10,680,000 thousand metric tons, or about 93.7% of the listed total.

What changed in the peat reserve data after 2020?

Estonia increased from 59,000 to 570,000 thousand metric tons in 2021, while Latvia returned to 150,000 after reporting 230,000 in 2019 and 220,000 in 2020. No other country changed during 2018-2025.
