Pepper Consumption by Country
In 2023, 11 thousand tonnes separated first from second in pepper: Vietnam at 89 thousand tonnes against India at 78, in a 716-thousand-tonne total spread across 164 reporters. Burkina Faso recorded the highest per-capita figure at 3.10 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
Third place belongs to the per-capita leader too. Burkina Faso holds 71 thousand tonnes by total and 3.10 kilograms per person, the only reporter in the top three of both lists. Vietnam's own per-capita figure sits far lower at 0.89 kilograms, which is what a 1.14-to-one race looks like from below. Everything about this table is small except its swings. Vietnam leads at 89 thousand tonnes after climbing from 6 in 2019, while Burkina Faso pairs third place with the per-capita crown at 3.10 kilograms.. The short window fell 38 thousand tonnes on American, Burkinabe and German declines outweighing Zimbabwean, Iraqi and Mexican gains. The long window rose 107 thousand tonnes almost entirely on Vietnam. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of pepper actually eaten. Rank the table by single tonnes and the podium reads 89, 78, 71. Vietnam, India and Burkina Faso sit within 18 thousand tonnes of each other, then daylight: fourth-placed United States at 58, fifth Iraq at 38. The whole top five weighs 334 thousand tonnes. Shares tell the same compressed story. Vietnam holds 12.4 percent of the 716-thousand-tonne listed total, the top three 33.2 percent and the top ten 68.0 percent. This is a table where eleventh place still matters: Brazil's 21 thousand tonnes sit 17 thousand tonnes behind fifth-placed Iraq. Among the 164 reporters present in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply slipped from 754 thousand tonnes to 716. The largest single move belongs to the United States, down 18 thousand tonnes (23.7 percent), and nothing else reaches double digits except Zimbabwe's plus 6. Burkina Faso, Germany, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates each fell 6, while Iraq added 4 and Mexico 3. For the 162 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 609 thousand tonnes to 716 thousand tonnes, a gain of 107 thousand tonnes (17.6 percent). The 2019 total includes 163 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 164; Cuba, with a reported zero in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Laos and Tuvalu entered with reported zeros. Vietnam added 83 thousand tonnes (up 1,383.3 percent from 6 thousand tonnes), Iraq 36 (up 1,800.0 percent), Indonesia 23, Burkina Faso 17 and Brazil 10, while Tajikistan fell 23 (down 51.1 percent), the United States 16 and Germany 12. Strip out Vietnam and the five-year growth shrinks to 24 thousand tonnes. Per capita, Burkina Faso's 3.10 kilograms from 71 thousand tonnes lead Tajikistan at 2.15 kilograms, while Vietnam, first by total, records 0.89 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Pepper recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of pepper people actually ate. Other spices recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, Vietnam had the largest listed food supply of pepper among the 164 reporters with reported values, at 89 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 78 thousand tonnes, while Burkina Faso ranked third at 71 thousand tonnes. Burkina Faso had the highest per-capita pepper food supply at 3.10 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of pepper actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pepper from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 165 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 716 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 164 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Pepper Food Supply at a Glance

Pepper Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What would this table be without Vietnam?
Without Vietnam's 83-thousand-tonne gain, the five-year increase would shrink from 107 thousand tonnes to 24. Vietnam rose from 6 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 89 in 2023.
Why do six reporters share the same tiny per-capita band?
Tajikistan at 2.15 kilograms, Sri Lanka at 1.24 and Zimbabwe at 1.22 sit far below Burkina Faso's 3.10 yet far above the near-zero medians: the median reporter records just 0.06 kilograms.
Is the food supply of pepper the same as pepper eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
