Phosphate Rock Production by Country
Phosphate rock production by country measures how much phosphate rock each country mines, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production of phosphate rock (marketable), in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2019-2023), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 38 countries with recorded phosphate rock production during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 24 countries, which produced a combined 244,880,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 770,000 tonnes, this totals 245,650,000 tonnes, below the reported World total of 250,000,000 tonnes in the source. The remaining countries carry their latest available values from 2023 or earlier.
Largest Phosphate Rock-Producing Countries in 2025
China produced the most phosphate rock in 2025 with 110,000,000 tonnes. Morocco ranked second with 36,000,000, followed by the United States (20,000,000), Russia (14,000,000), Jordan (12,000,000), and Saudi Arabia (10,000,000). Egypt (5,500,000), Brazil (5,000,000), Peru (4,800,000), and Tunisia (3,300,000) complete the top ten.
Phosphate Rock Production by Country
China alone accounted for about 44 percent of the World total in 2025, and China and Morocco together for about 58 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 66 percent. China's output was about 3.1 times that of Morocco. Six countries produced at least 10 million tonnes in 2025.

Methodology
The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national phosphate rock production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, the USGS Historical Statistics for Mineral and Material Commodities, and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2019-2023. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; countries not reported individually keep their latest available Our World in Data values from 2023 or earlier. Values refer to mine production of marketable phosphate rock, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The sum of individually reported country estimates does not equal the reported World total because the source applies rounding and other adjustments at the country and World levels. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country produces the most phosphate rock in 2025?
China produced the most phosphate rock in 2025 with 110,000,000 tonnes, followed by Morocco (36,000,000) and the United States (20,000,000).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
The table covers 38 countries with recorded production during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 24 of them; the rest keep their latest available values from 2023 or earlier.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures mine production of marketable phosphate rock, in tonnes, based on mined production as in the underlying sources.
Which country produces the least phosphate rock among those with 2025 data?
Mexico recorded the smallest 2025 output at 450,000 tonnes. Among countries with older data, Zimbabwe recorded 5,594 tonnes in 2023.
Why do most countries show older figures?
USGS reports 2025 estimates individually for 24 countries; the rest are not reported individually and keep their latest available Our World in Data values from 2023 or earlier.
