Phosphate Rock Reserves by Country
Western Sahara reported 50,000,000 thousand metric tons through 2020; from 2021, the identical figure appears under Morocco. The figures come from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026 and cover phosphate rock reserves. The ranking includes 25 country rows, with 24 reporting a 2025 value, and lists 72,142,000 thousand metric tons in 2025. USGS separately lists 800,000 thousand metric tons under Other countries without country attribution. The published world reserve total is 73,000,000 thousand metric tons, rounded in the source.
Morocco's 50,000,000 thousand metric tons are nearly fifteen times China's 3,400,000. The next three — Egypt (2,800,000), Tunisia (2,500,000) and Russia (2,400,000) — total 7,700,000, less than one-sixth of Morocco's reserves. Only three of the 24 reporting countries changed in 2025; the other 21 were unchanged from 2024. Western Sahara reported 50,000,000 thousand metric tons from 2018 through 2020, after which the figure no longer appears under that row. Morocco has reported the same 50,000,000 thousand metric tons in every year from 2021 through 2025. Western Sahara therefore has no 2025 country-level value, while Morocco accounts for the largest figure in the current ranking. Tunisia rose from 100,000 to 2,500,000 thousand metric tons in 2022, a twenty-five-fold increase. Russia increased from 600,000 to 2,400,000 in 2023. China fell from 3,200,000 in 2021 to 1,900,000 in 2022, then rose to 3,800,000 in 2023 before easing to 3,700,000 in 2024 and 3,400,000 in 2025. In 2025, China fell by 300,000 thousand metric tons (-8.1%), Australia by 300,000 (-27.3%), and Jordan by 180,000 (-18.0%) — the only three movers among 24 reporters. Nine countries, including Algeria (2,200,000) and Vietnam (30,000), have reported unchanged reserves throughout the eight-year series. Figures come from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2019-2026. The 2025 reserve figures are those reported in the 2026 edition. Units are thousand metric tons, exactly as reported. Blank entries indicate that the source reported no value; they are not zeroes. The source's world total is rounded, so shares are computed against the sum of the listed countries. For this series the published world reserve total is 73,000,000 thousand metric tons. Reserves and production are different measures and should not be combined without equalizing units.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What are phosphate rock reserves?
Phosphate rock reserves are estimated quantities of phosphate rock that can be economically extracted under applicable conditions, in thousand metric tons. Production measures the amount mined in a year.
Which countries hold the most phosphate rock reserves?
Morocco (50,000,000 thousand metric tons), China (3,400,000) and Egypt (2,800,000) reported the largest 2025 values.
Why do Morocco and Western Sahara have the same historical reserve figure?
Western Sahara reported 50,000,000 thousand metric tons through 2020; Morocco reports the identical figure from 2021 onward. The table records each row as published, with no value assigned beyond what the source reports.
Why do shares use the listed total?
The USGS world total (73,000,000 thousand metric tons) is rounded, so page shares are computed against the sum of the listed countries.
