Potatoes Imports by Country

Uzbekistan nearly tripled its potatoes imports in four years while Belgium, which imported more than three times as many potatoes as Uzbekistan in 2024, added about a third. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Potatoes, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 162 countries; 114 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 17.3 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for potatoes imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Belgium was the largest potatoes importer in the 2024 listed data with 4,076,221 tonnes, followed by the Netherlands with 2,343,831 tonnes and Uzbekistan with 1,306,405 tonnes. Spain ranked fourth with 1,277,919 tonnes, ahead of Italy (913,686 tonnes), France (602,529 tonnes), Germany (591,759 tonnes) and Portugal (553,359 tonnes). Belgium also led on import value at 1,279,416,000 US dollars, followed by the Netherlands (665,243,000) and Spain (607,960,000).

Uzbekistan rose from 450,994 tonnes in 2020 to 1,306,405 tonnes in 2024 (+855,411 tonnes, up 189.7 percent), while Belgium rose from 3,024,137 to 4,076,221 tonnes (+1,052,084 tonnes, up 34.8 percent). Both countries increased their imports, but Uzbekistan started from a much smaller base.

Belgium holds 23.5 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.74 times the Netherlands; the top three together hold 44.6 percent, the top five 57.2 percent and the top ten 72.1 percent. Seven of the nine countries above 500,000 tonnes were in Western or Southern Europe, while Uzbekistan was the only Central Asian importer above one million tonnes.

Potatoes Import Gains Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (111 countries with data in both years) rose from 15,616,097 tonnes to 17,316,760 tonnes, a change of 1,700,663 tonnes (10.9 percent). The totals listed for each year were 16,392,451 tonnes (147 reporters) and 17,333,023 tonnes (114 reporters). Uzbekistan added 733,463 tonnes (up 128.0 percent) and the Netherlands 406,601 tonnes (up 21.0 percent). Belgium fell 178,723 tonnes (down 4.2 percent) and Canada 169,267 tonnes (from 296,580 to 127,313 tonnes, down 57.1 percent).

Potatoes Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (112 countries with data in both years) rose from 13,012,909 tonnes to 17,325,714 tonnes, a change of 4,312,805 tonnes (33.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 14,446,840 tonnes (151 reporters) and 17,333,023 tonnes (114 reporters); 39 countries reporting in 2020 (1,433,930 tonnes combined, led by Russia with 316,225 and Nepal with 276,496 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Spain added 355,770 tonnes (up 38.6 percent). Ukraine fell 250,624 tonnes (from 301,668 to 51,044 tonnes, down 83.1 percent) and Germany 89,589 tonnes (down 13.1 percent).

Methodology

Two growth stories share this table and need different denominators: Uzbekistan's 189.7 percent divides by 450,994 tonnes while Belgium's 34.8 percent divides by 3,024,137. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Potatoes, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. For potatoes imports, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes; values remain full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 potatoes imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the potatoes imports data, a zero indicates a reported zero quantity; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For potatoes imports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an import record and its mirror export may disagree.
