The United States bought 11,650 tonnes of sweet potatoes abroad in 2020 and 89,876 tonnes in 2024, climbing from the middle of the ranking to third place in four years. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Sweet potatoes, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 152 countries; 109 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 986,268 tonnes. The 2024 country list for sweet potatoes imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Sweet Potatoes Imports by Country in 2024

The Netherlands was the largest sweet potatoes importer in the 2024 listed data with 207,446 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom with 142,873 tonnes and the United States with 89,876 tonnes. Canada ranked fourth with 72,918 tonnes, ahead of France (70,830 tonnes), Belgium (56,454 tonnes), Germany (52,615 tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (39,946 tonnes). The Netherlands also led on import value at 173,668,000 US dollars, followed by the United Kingdom (99,009,000) and Germany (68,371,000).

The United States' 2020-2024 gain of 78,226 tonnes (up 671.5 percent) is the largest absolute advance in the table and built a new third place from 11,650 tonnes. No other reporter added even half as much in absolute terms over the same span, while the Netherlands, the leader throughout, added 35,965 tonnes (up 21.0 percent).

The Netherlands holds 21.0 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.45 times the United Kingdom; the top three together hold 44.6 percent, the top five 59.2 percent and the top ten 79.3 percent.

Sweet Potatoes Import Shifts Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (102 countries with data in both years) rose from 857,222 tonnes to 980,479 tonnes, a change of 123,257 tonnes (14.4 percent). The totals listed for each year were 883,936 tonnes (129 reporters) and 986,268 tonnes (109 reporters). Spain added 11,881 tonnes (from 11,168 to 23,049 tonnes, up 106.4 percent). Canada fell 4,642 tonnes (down 6.0 percent) and Thailand 2,938 tonnes (down 20.6 percent).

Sweet Potatoes Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (101 countries with data in both years) rose from 787,867 tonnes to 984,683 tonnes, a change of 196,816 tonnes (25.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 909,796 tonnes (135 reporters) and 986,268 tonnes (109 reporters); 34 countries reporting in 2020 (121,929 tonnes combined, led by Laos with 85,876 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Saudi Arabia added 19,329 tonnes (up 93.8 percent) and France 17,023 tonnes (up 31.6 percent). The United Kingdom fell 16,466 tonnes (down 10.3 percent) and Bolivia 3,336 tonnes (from 3,863 to 527.18 tonnes, down 86.4 percent).

Methodology

The gap between the three leading countries is also clear: the United States was 52,997 tonnes behind the United Kingdom and 117,570 tonnes behind the Netherlands. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Sweet potatoes, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. For sweet potatoes imports, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes; values remain full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. In the sweet potatoes imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For sweet potatoes imports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an import record and its mirror export may disagree.
