Egypt leads the United States by 1.03 to one, a difference of 7,106 tonnes, while the Netherlands ranks third by quantity but leads all countries in export value. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Sweet potatoes, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 126 countries; 79 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is 891,433 tonnes. The 2024 country list for sweet potatoes exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

Egypt was the largest sweet potatoes exporter in the 2024 listed data with 233,170 tonnes, followed by the United States with 226,064 tonnes and the Netherlands with 172,355 tonnes. China ranked fourth with 35,666 tonnes, ahead of Canada (27,518 tonnes), Portugal (23,280 tonnes), Spain (23,073 tonnes) and Brazil (16,908 tonnes). On export value, the Netherlands led at 203,530,000 US dollars, followed by the United States (173,918,000) and Egypt (162,950,000).

Egypt and the United States are separated by only 7,106 tonnes, but the value ranking changes the picture: the Netherlands leads on export value despite ranking third by quantity, at about 1,181 dollars per tonne against Egypt's 699 and 769 for the United States. The difference reflects the reported value per tonne, rather than export quantity alone.

Egypt holds 26.2 percent of the listed 2024 total; the top three together hold 70.9 percent, the top five 77.9 percent and the top ten 88.4 percent.

Sweet Potatoes Export Shifts Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (77 countries with data in both years) rose from 831,071 tonnes to 891,410 tonnes, a change of 60,339 tonnes (7.3 percent). The totals listed for each year were 944,981 tonnes (106 reporters) and 891,433 tonnes (79 reporters); 29 countries reporting in 2023 (113,910 tonnes combined, led by Mali with 85,254 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Egypt added 72,171 tonnes (up 44.8 percent), while Mexico added 7,427 tonnes, rising from 3,214 to 10,641 tonnes on a much smaller base. The United States fell 27,496 tonnes (down 10.8 percent) and Canada 19,299 tonnes (down 41.2 percent).

Sweet Potatoes Exports in 2024 Against 2020

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (74 countries with data in both years) rose from 747,019 tonnes to 891,389 tonnes, a change of 144,370 tonnes (19.3 percent). The totals listed for each year were 876,783 tonnes (105 reporters) and 891,433 tonnes (79 reporters). South Africa added 8,111 tonnes (from 7,508 to 15,619 tonnes, up 108.0 percent). Spain fell 28,918 tonnes (down 55.6 percent) and the United Kingdom 7,209 tonnes (down 66.1 percent).

Methodology

The 1.03 ratio between Egypt and the United States is based on their exact reported quantities: 233,170 and 226,064 tonnes, respectively, a difference of 7,106 tonnes. Yearly reporter totals sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Sweet potatoes, export quantity and export value, 2020-2024. For sweet potatoes exports, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes; values remain full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 sweet potatoes exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the sweet potatoes exports data, a zero indicates a reported zero quantity; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For sweet potatoes exports changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may disagree.
