Potatoes Production by Country (2026)

Examining potato production by country across 159 territories, 2018-2024 FAO data paired with 2026 forecasts shows global potato output of roughly 388 million tonnes in 2024. China stands as the leading potato producer, with India and Ukraine completing the top three.

China and India Dominate While the United States Declines

Listed 2024 potato production reached about 390,322,508 tonnes worldwide. China accounted for 24.3% of that total with 94,806,520 tonnes, followed by India at 57,053,344 tonnes and Ukraine at 21,128,900 tonnes. The top three together supplied about 44.3% of global output. The United States produced 19,061,860 tonnes, down from 20,421,560 tonnes in 2018, while Russia reported 18,448,001 tonnes, also below its 2018 level.

Asian Growth Outpaces Traditional European Producers

India expanded from 51,310,000 tonnes in 2018 to 57,053,344 tonnes in 2024, driven by Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Bangladesh reached 10,601,182 tonnes, up from 9,744,412 tonnes. Pakistan rose to 8,434,370 tonnes. In contrast, Germany produced 12,703,300 tonnes in 2024, and France 9,237,460 tonnes, both showing modest growth from 2018. The shift reflects rising demand in South Asia where potatoes supplement rice-based diets and processing industries are developing.

Europe’s Mature Market and the Andean Heritage

Ukraine maintained production near 21,128,900 tonnes despite the conflict, while Russia produced 18,448,001 tonnes. Canada grew from 5,204,548 tonnes in 2018 to 6,511,540 tonnes in 2024, driven by processing demand. The Netherlands produced 6,366,750 tonnes from roughly 160,000 hectares, achieving the world’s highest per-hectare yields through advanced seed breeding and precision farming. Belgium reached 3,977,850 tonnes, and both countries together dominate global french fry exports. Poland declined from 7,311,960 tonnes in 2018 to 5,920,170 tonnes. In the Andean region, Peru produced 6,579,754 tonnes, preserving thousands of native varieties in the potato’s ancestral home.

Africa and the Middle East Add to the Global Supply

Egypt produced 8,082,291 tonnes in 2024, Ethiopia 4,089,166 tonnes, South Africa 2,623,499 tonnes, and Kenya 2,188,110 tonnes. Several African countries have expanded potato area as the crop provides better food security per hectare than cereals. Türkiye produced 6,900,000 tonnes and Iran 2,921,904 tonnes. The Middle Eastern and North African markets rely on both domestic production and processed imports for their growing fast-food sectors.

2026 Outlook: China and India Hold Steady, Emerging Markets Rise

The 2026 estimates place China near 95,057,272 tonnes and India near 57,873,057 tonnes, reflecting stable growth trajectories. Ukraine’s estimate of 21,055,190 tonnes and Pakistan’s 8,822,541 tonnes show the range of outcomes across different market conditions. The medium-tier producers—countries between 3 and 8 million tonnes—contain the most forecast uncertainty, as several series combine moderate volatility with shifting demand patterns. These projections assume average growing conditions and do not account for extreme weather events or policy changes.
