Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 260,445 thousand tonnes to 267,712 thousand tonnes, a gain of 7,267 thousand tonnes (2.8 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 260,445 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 267,712 thousand tonnes in 2023, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 2,679 thousand tonnes (up 7.2 percent), accounting for 36.9 percent of the increase, followed by the United States with 2,606 thousand tonnes (up 15.9 percent), Germany with 889 thousand tonnes (up 17.2 percent), China with 807 thousand tonnes (up 1.2 percent) and Pakistan with 430 thousand tonnes (up 7.0 percent). Canada added 397 thousand tonnes (up 14.3 percent) and Australia 393 thousand tonnes (up 28.5 percent), while Egypt fell 406 thousand tonnes (down 9.3 percent).

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 252,189 thousand tonnes to 267,712 thousand tonnes, a gain of 15,523 thousand tonnes (6.2 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 121 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 5,085 thousand tonnes (up 14.5 percent), accounting for 32.8 percent of the increase, followed by China with 3,474 thousand tonnes (up 5.3 percent), Pakistan with 2,915 thousand tonnes (up 79.7 percent), the United States with 2,327 thousand tonnes (up 13.9 percent) and Egypt with 950 thousand tonnes (up 31.8 percent). Russia fell 933 thousand tonnes (down 7.1 percent), Romania 856 thousand tonnes (down 42.9 percent) and Iran 642 thousand tonnes (down 23.3 percent).

The increase is broad but led by Asia: India, China and Pakistan together account for 74.0 percent of the 2019-2023 common-reporter increase. The per-capita ranking sits in eastern Europe and Central Asia, with Ukraine at 146.96 and Bosnia and Herzegovina at 102.86 kilograms per year, while the total-quantity leaders China and India record 48.79 and 27.85 kilograms.

It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much potatoes people actually ate. The item covers potatoes and products derived from them, such as frozen or processed potato products, and excludes sweet potatoes, cassava and other roots and tubers recorded under their own items.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Potatoes and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances are compiled from national and other official sources.
