Poultry Meat Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 26,618 thousand tonnes of listed poultry meat food supply, nearly a fifth of a 135,809-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. Yet the per-capita crown sits far away in Tonga at 87.93 kilograms per person per year from 9 thousand tonnes. The United States followed China by total at 18,734 thousand tonnes. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
China's 26,618 thousand tonnes lead the United States' 18,734 by a ratio of 1.42 to one. Per capita, the ranking is led by Tonga at 87.93 kilograms, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at 86.21 and Guyana at 76.85, none of them above 100 thousand tonnes in total. The two rankings produce very different leaders. China, the United States and Brazil lead by total at 26,618, 18,734 and 10,039 thousand tonnes, while Tonga, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana lead per capita at 87.93, 86.21 and 76.85 kilograms. The United States still records a relatively high per-capita figure of 54.54 kilograms, followed by Brazil at 47.55. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 3,924 thousand tonnes, or 3.0 percent. China, the United States, Indonesia and the United Kingdom recorded the largest increases, while Saudi Arabia recorded the steepest fall. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 9.3 percent, with China contributing 47.9 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of poultry meat actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by China, whose listed food supply of poultry meat reached 26,618 thousand tonnes. The United States followed with 18,734 thousand tonnes and Brazil with 10,039 thousand tonnes. India and Russia completed the top five at 5,059 and 5,044 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 19.6 percent of the 135,809-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 40.8 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 48.2 percent and the top ten 60.3 percent. India and Russia differ by just 15 thousand tonnes in fourth and fifth. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 131,885 thousand tonnes to 135,809 thousand tonnes, a gain of 3,924 thousand tonnes (3.0 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 1,764 thousand tonnes (up 7.1 percent), the United States added 378 thousand tonnes (up 2.1 percent), Indonesia added 337 thousand tonnes (up 8.1 percent), the United Kingdom added 193 thousand tonnes (up 7.9 percent), Pakistan added 178 thousand tonnes (up 9.0 percent), Vietnam added 167 thousand tonnes (up 9.3 percent) and Egypt added 155 thousand tonnes (up 7.7 percent), while Saudi Arabia fell 214 thousand tonnes (down 13.0 percent). For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 124,298 thousand tonnes to 135,809 thousand tonnes, a gain of 11,511 thousand tonnes (9.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 326 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 5,509 thousand tonnes (up 26.1 percent), India added 677 thousand tonnes (up 15.4 percent), Pakistan added 640 thousand tonnes (up 42.1 percent), Vietnam added 640 thousand tonnes (up 48.0 percent), Indonesia added 520 thousand tonnes (up 13.1 percent) and Egypt added 507 thousand tonnes (up 30.5 percent), while Myanmar fell 925 thousand tonnes (down 58.5 percent) and the United States fell 478 thousand tonnes (down 2.5 percent). China contributes 47.9 percent of the five-year net increase, with Myanmar's 925-thousand-tonne fall the largest offset. Pakistan and Vietnam added an identical 640 thousand tonnes each. Per capita, Tonga's 87.93 kilograms from 9 thousand tonnes lead Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at 86.21 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 18.71 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Poultry Meat recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of poultry meat people actually ate. Chicken, duck, goose and turkey cuts recorded under separate detailed items sit outside this aggregate figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed poultry meat food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 26,618 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 18,734 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 10,039 thousand tonnes. Tonga had the highest per-capita poultry meat food supply at 87.93 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of poultry meat actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Poultry Meat from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 135,809 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Poultry Meat Food Supply at a Glance

Poultry Meat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the two poultry rankings share almost no names?
China, the United States and Brazil lead by total at 26,618, 18,734 and 10,039 thousand tonnes, while Tonga, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana lead per capita at 87.93, 86.21 and 76.85 kilograms. The two measures answer different questions about the same food supply.
Why did Myanmar's poultry meat food supply fall 58.5 percent since 2019?
The FAO Food Balances data show Myanmar at 1,580 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 655 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 925-thousand-tonne decrease was the largest five-year fall in the table.
Is the food supply of poultry meat the same as poultry meat eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
