Raw Milk of Camel Consumption by Country

Pakistan had the largest reported supply of raw camel milk in 2023, at 956,000 tonnes, or about 39.1 percent of the listed total. Kenya ranked second at 871,053 tonnes and had the highest per-person supply, at 43.12 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 2,445,953 tonnes across 24 country rows, 23 of which reported a value for that year. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually drank.

Raw Milk of Camel Consumption

Ethiopia placed third by volume at 214,953 tonnes, and the three leading countries together accounted for about 83.5 percent of the listed 2023 total, with Pakistan alone holding roughly 39.1 percent of it. Pakistan and Kenya together dominate this table, and the gap to Ethiopia in third is unusually wide.

  • Kenya recorded the largest listed gain by volume.
  • Pakistan added 12,000 tonnes, up 1.3 percent.
  • Mongolia lost about a seventh of its 2022 level.
  • Qatar lost 712 tonnes, down 4.1 percent.

Kenya Jumps in Raw Milk of Camel

Kenya added 138,781 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 18.9 percent to 871,053 tonnes. Pakistan added 12,000 tonnes, up 1.3 percent, and Ethiopia added 2,507 tonnes, up 1.2 percent. Mongolia lost 1,475 tonnes, down 15.3 percent, and Qatar lost 712 tonnes, down 4.1 percent. The countries with a value in both years rose from 2,289,978 tonnes to 2,445,953 tonnes, up 155,975 tonnes, or 6.8 percent, and every reporting country appears in both years.

Kenya's Camel Milk Supply Falls Over Five Years

Between 2019 and 2023, the 21 countries with a value in both years fell from 1,511,502 tonnes to 1,471,753 tonnes, down 39,749 tonnes, or 2.6 percent. This comparison excludes Pakistan, which has no 2019 value, so the decline describes the shared set and not the full listed total. Kenya recorded the largest decline within that set, losing 92,536 tonnes, down 9.6 percent, while Turkmenistan shed 9,880 tonnes, down 57.6 percent, and Qatar gave up 3,598 tonnes, down 17.9 percent. Ethiopia added 44,318 tonnes, up 26.0 percent, the Emirates added 17,403 tonnes, up 68.8 percent, and China added 4,341 tonnes, up 25.9 percent. Kazakhstan entered the comparison with a 2023 value and no 2019 value, while Ukraine left it.

Kenya Leads Camel Milk Supply per Person

Kenya recorded 43.12 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Qatar at 15.22 grams in second and Djibouti at 13.85 grams in third. Mauritania sat fourth at 13.82 grams. Kenya therefore ranks second by volume and first per person, while Pakistan, first by volume, stands far lower on the per-person measure.

What the Camel Milk Data Measures

Raw camel milk available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only, and the listed total is not a world figure that includes regional aggregates. Total tonnage shows the scale of reported food supply, while grams per person per day adjust the figures for population size.

This table records no reported zero in 2023; the only missing cell belongs to Ukraine, which has no value after 2019. Pakistan, the largest supplier, has no 2019 or 2020 values, so it sits in the annual total but outside the five-year comparison, and the five-year trend should not be read as the trend of the full listed total.

Methodology

The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for raw milk of camel, over 2019-2023. Of the 24 country rows, 23 reported a value in 2023. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 23 countries for 2022-2023 and 21 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who trails Kenya per person?

Kenya led at 43.12 grams per person per day in 2023, ahead of Qatar at 15.22 grams and Djibouti at 13.85 grams, with Mauritania fourth at 13.82 grams.

What share of the listed supply came from Pakistan?

Pakistan accounted for about 39.1 percent of the 2023 listed total of 2,445,953 tonnes, the largest single share of any reporting country in that year.

Who jumped most lately?

Kenya added 138,781 tonnes, up 18.9 percent in the latest year, to 871,053 tonnes, the largest increase by tonnage among the reporting countries that year.

Is this what people actually ate?

No. The figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual individual intake, so they describe national availability rather than what people consumed in each country.

Why is Pakistan missing from the five-year comparison?

Pakistan has no reported values for 2019 and 2020 in this dataset, so its change from 2019 cannot be calculated, and the five-year comparison covers only the 21 countries with values at both endpoints.
