Nuclear, Renewable and Other Energy Consumption by Country
Nuclear, renewable and other energy consumption by country measures primary energy consumption from nuclear, renewables and other sources in each country, expressed in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 214 countries and territories, with 214 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 71.0501 quad Btu in 2024, up from 66.9119 quad Btu in 2023.
China (17.3790 quad Btu) led in 2024, just ahead of the United States (16.8643 quad Btu). France (4.0213 quad Btu), Russia (2.9931 quad Btu) and Brazil (2.8145 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 24.5% of the world total in 2024, consuming about 3.1% more than the United States. Together, China and the United States represented about 48.2% of the 2024 total. The top three reached 53.9%, the top five 62.0%, and the top ten 76.1%. China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 15.2084 to 17.3790 quad Btu (+2.1706 quad Btu, about 14.3%). The world total rose from 66.9119 to 71.0501 quad Btu (+4.1382 quad Btu, about 6.2%), so China alone accounted for about 52% of the world increase. Indonesia recorded the largest absolute decline, falling from 0.4176 to 0.2915 quad Btu (-0.1261 quad Btu, about 30.2%). Among the five largest consumers, China recorded the strongest growth, with consumption increasing 14.3%. France followed with 8.5%, while Brazil, the United States and Russia recorded more modest increases of 3.7%, 2.9% and 1.0%, respectively. Indonesia's 30.2% decline was much larger in percentage terms than the changes among the leading consumers. Reported world values were 59.9675 quad Btu in 2019, 60.2922 quad Btu in 2020, 63.3455 quad Btu in 2021, 64.7920 quad Btu in 2022, 66.9119 quad Btu in 2023 and 71.0501 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 18.5% above the 2019 level with growth in every year. The series therefore shows a steady upward trend over the six-year period, with the strongest annual increase occurring in 2024. For the two leading countries, consumption and production were relatively close in 2024. China consumed 17.3790 quad Btu compared with 17.9020 in production, while the United States consumed 16.8643 compared with 17.0714 in production. The small gap between the two leaders contrasts with their much larger separation from the rest of the ranking: France, in third place, recorded 4.0213 quad Btu. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption from nuclear, renewables and other sources in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries and territories listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers nuclear, renewable and other energy consumption only. Fossil energy sources and production are reported separately in the source.
