Road Traffic Mortality Rate by Country
The road traffic mortality rate measures the number of deaths caused by road traffic injuries per 100,000 people in a country's population. It is a key indicator of road safety and public health, and is closely linked to infrastructure quality, vehicle use, and enforcement of traffic rules. Higher rates generally indicate more dangerous road conditions. The statistics are based on World Health Organization (WHO) estimates compiled by the World Bank and published in the World Development Indicators dataset. The dataset covers 185 countries and territories, with observations from 2014 to 2019.
The Dominican Republic recorded the highest road traffic mortality rate in 2019 at 64.6 deaths per 100,000 people. Zimbabwe ranked second with 41.2, followed by Venezuela (39.0), Liberia (38.9), and Eritrea (37.9). The Central African Republic (37.7), South Sudan (36.7), Saudi Arabia (35.9), Burundi (35.5), and the DR Congo (34.9) complete the top ten. High road traffic mortality rates are particularly common in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Among the 182 countries and territories with 2019 data, 71 record a mortality rate of 20 per 100,000 people or more, and 48 record a rate of 25 or more. At the other end of the ranking, Antigua and Barbuda records a rate of 0.0 per 100,000 people, the lowest in the dataset, followed by Micronesia (0.2), the Maldives (1.6), and Kiribati (1.9). Among selected major economies, Saudi Arabia records the highest rate at 35.9 per 100,000 people, above China (17.4), Brazil (16.0), India (15.6), and the United States (12.7). Japan (3.6), Germany (3.8), and the United Kingdom (3.2) record the lowest rates among major economies. In Africa, the highest rates in the dataset are recorded: Zimbabwe (41.2), Liberia (38.9), Eritrea (37.9), the Central African Republic (37.7), South Sudan (36.7), Burundi (35.5), and the DR Congo (34.9) all record rates above 34 per 100,000 people, while South Africa records 22.2, Ethiopia 28.2, and Nigeria 20.7. In Asia, Thailand (32.2) and Vietnam (30.6) record the highest rates, followed by Malaysia (22.5), Cambodia (19.6), and Laos (17.9). China records 17.4 and India 15.6, while Japan (3.6) records by far the lowest rate in the region. In the Middle East and North Africa, Saudi Arabia (35.9), Yemen (29.4), Iraq (27.3), Iran (21.5), and Libya (21.3) record the highest rates, while Israel (3.9), Qatar (7.3), the United Arab Emirates (8.9), and Egypt (10.1) record the lowest rates in the region. In Europe, Russia (12.0) records the highest rate, followed by Ukraine (10.2), Poland (9.4), Greece (8.3), and Portugal (8.2). The lowest rates in the world are recorded in this region: Iceland (2.0), Norway (2.1), Switzerland (2.2), Sweden (3.1), and Ireland (3.1). Türkiye records 6.7, Germany 3.8, and France 5.1. In the Americas, the Dominican Republic (64.6) records by far the highest rate in the world, followed by Venezuela (39.0), Guatemala (22.9), and Belize (22.6). The United States records 12.7, Brazil 16.0, Mexico 12.8, and Argentina 14.1, while Canada records the lowest rate in the region at 5.3. The Dominican Republic recorded the largest increase between 2014 and 2019, rising from 31.7 to 64.6 deaths per 100,000 people, up 32.9 points. Tonga recorded the second largest increase (5.9 to 33.0, up 27.1 points), followed by Saint Lucia (12.9 to 29.8, up 16.9 points) and Saudi Arabia (25.0 to 35.9, up 10.9 points). Oman recorded the largest decline, falling from 20.9 to 10.6 per 100,000 people, down 10.3 points, followed by Syria (24.8 to 14.9, down 9.9 points), the United Arab Emirates (17.8 to 8.9, down 8.9 points), and Russia (20.3 to 12.0, down 8.3 points). The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator SH.STA.TRAF.P5 (Mortality caused by road traffic injury, per 100,000 population). The main comparison uses 2019 data where available, covering 182 of the 185 countries and territories in the dataset. For countries without a 2019 observation, the latest available year is noted where relevant, but earlier years are not substituted for missing 2019 values in the ranking. Values are expressed as deaths per 100,000 people. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.Countries With the Highest Road Traffic Mortality Rate in 2019
