Seed Spices Consumption by Country

India had the largest reported seed spice food supply in 2023, at 1,534,744 tonnes, accounting for 60.1 percent of the 2,555,190-tonne total across countries with reported data. Türkiye ranked first in daily food supply per person, at 8.87 grams, ahead of Syria at 4.55 grams. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually eat.

China placed fourth at 99,230 tonnes, with Iran fifth at 47,727 and Bangladesh sixth at 45,720. Syria, the United States, Morocco and Indonesia closed the top ten between 26,328 and 39,170 tonnes. The top three held 75.6 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 81.3 percent. India had the highest listed food supply at 1,534,744 tonnes, while Türkiye had the highest per-capita food supply.

• India's seed spice supply rises by 214,428 tonnes, up 16.2 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• China's seed spice supply climbs by 16,253 tonnes, up 19.6 percent, firming fourth place.
• Russia's seed spice supply falls by 15,428 tonnes, down 61.6 percent, dropping out of the top ten.
• Sri Lankan seed spices grow: up 7,108 tonnes, or 46.9 percent, the best rate among risers.

India Dominates Total Seed Spice Supply

India added 214,428 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 16.2 percent to 1,534,744 tonnes. China added 16,253 tonnes, up 19.6 percent. Türkiye added 9,258 tonnes, up 3.4 percent. Sri Lanka added 7,108 tonnes, up 46.9 percent. Iran added 6,915 tonnes, up 16.9 percent. Syria added 6,504 tonnes, up 19.9 percent. Pakistan added 4,185 tonnes, up 19.7 percent. Russia lost 15,428 tonnes, down 61.6 percent. The 169 countries present in both years rose from 2,299,097 tonnes to 2,555,188 tonnes, up 256,091 tonnes, or 11.1 percent, with one arrival carrying 2 tonnes.

Türkiye Records the Largest Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 164 countries present in both years surged from 1,656,965 tonnes to 2,555,167 tonnes, up 898,202 tonnes, or 54.2 percent. India added 488,193 tonnes, up 46.6 percent, accounting for 54.4 percent of the net gain. Türkiye added 237,984 tonnes from 44,560. Mexico added 47,187 tonnes, up 71.1 percent. Syria added 32,350 tonnes from 6,820. Bangladesh added 20,345 tonnes, up 80.2 percent. Kenya added 19,009 tonnes from 975. China added 18,086 tonnes, up 22.3 percent. Egypt lost 19,523 tonnes, down 73.4 percent. One country left with 772 tonnes, against six arrivals with 23.

Türkiye Leads in Daily Supply per Person

Türkiye's 8.87 grams a day nearly doubled Syria's 4.55 in second. India sat third at 2.92 grams, with Tunisia at 2.86 and Sri Lanka at 2.66. Mexico, Bahrain, Morocco, Seychelles and Trinidad and Tobago followed below 2.4 grams. India pairs first-place tonnage with third-place daily intensity. Türkiye pairs second with first.

Anise, badian, coriander, cumin, caraway, fennel and juniper berries for human consumption are grouped here in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The short name above covers that official group, pinned here and in the methodology. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. India dominates total supply, while Türkiye leads per person.

Türkiye's 534.1 percent five-year rate divides by 44,560 tonnes and means scaling, not a blip. Syria's 474.3 percent rate divides by 6,820 tonnes the same way. Kenya's 1,948.7 percent rate divides by 975 tonnes from 2019. Finland and Bulgaria fell to reported zeros after substantial earlier values, so those zeros merit checking against the source.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts enter tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for the seed spice group across 2019-2023. The official item reads anise, badian, coriander, cumin, caraway, fennel and juniper berries, raw, shortened above for readability. Percentages rest on the earlier year, and no percentage is stated from a zero base. The dataset contains 171 countries minus aggregates, 170 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the 170 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
