Other Spices Consumption by Country

In 2023, India had the largest listed food supply of other spices among 174 reporters, at 4,411 thousand tonnes, while Guyana had the highest per-capita figure at 21.05 kilograms per person per year. The 2023 listed total was 9,414 thousand tonnes, with Nigeria second at 669 thousand tonnes and Türkiye third at 523 thousand tonnes. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Other Spices Consumption

India leads the 2023 ranking at 4,411 thousand tonnes, 6.59 times Nigeria at 669 thousand tonnes. Guyana tops the per-capita ranking at 21.05 kilograms per person per year from 17 thousand tonnes, ahead of Bhutan at 7.27 kilograms.

Other Spices Food Supply at a Glance

  • India had the largest listed other spices food supply in 2023 at 4,411 thousand tonnes.
  • Nigeria ranked second at 669 thousand tonnes, followed by Türkiye at 523 thousand tonnes.
  • Guyana had the highest per-capita food supply at 21.05 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 9,414 thousand tonnes across 174 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 174 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed other spices food supply increased by 1,682 thousand tonnes, or 21.8 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

India remained far ahead of the other reporters in 2023, with Nigeria and Türkiye forming a distant second tier. Bangladesh and China followed the top three, while Guyana stood out on a per-capita basis despite a much smaller total supply. The gap between total and per-capita rankings shows how population size substantially changes the picture when other spices food supply is viewed on an individual basis.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 174 reporters with data in both years rose by 275 thousand tonnes, or 3.0 percent. India, China and Ethiopia accounted for most of the largest increases, while Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Russia and Germany recorded notable declines. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 21.8 percent, with India contributing 43.6 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other spices actually eaten.

Other Spices Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by India, whose listed food supply of other spices reached 4,411 thousand tonnes. Nigeria followed with 669 thousand tonnes and Türkiye with 523 thousand tonnes. Bangladesh and China completed the top five at 507 and 375 thousand tonnes, respectively.

India holds 46.9 percent of the 9,414-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 59.5 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 68.9 percent and the top ten 82.3 percent. Türkiye more than doubled from 200 thousand tonnes in 2019.

India Adds 297 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 3.0 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 174 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 9,139 thousand tonnes to 9,414 thousand tonnes, a gain of 275 thousand tonnes (3.0 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 174 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 297 thousand tonnes (up 7.2 percent), China added 65 thousand tonnes (up 21.0 percent) and Ethiopia added 35 thousand tonnes (up 15.4 percent), while Indonesia fell 69 thousand tonnes (down 15.9 percent), Bangladesh fell 24 thousand tonnes (down 4.5 percent), Nigeria fell 21 thousand tonnes (down 3.0 percent), Russia fell 17 thousand tonnes (down 43.6 percent) and Germany fell 9 thousand tonnes (down 15.8 percent).

India Adds 734 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 21.8 Percent Since 2019

For the 174 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 7,732 thousand tonnes to 9,414 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,682 thousand tonnes (21.8 percent). The 2019 total includes 175 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 174; Cuba, with 1 thousand tonne in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 734 thousand tonnes (up 20.0 percent), Türkiye added 323 thousand tonnes (up 161.5 percent), China added 170 thousand tonnes (up 82.9 percent), Bangladesh added 123 thousand tonnes (up 32.0 percent), Nigeria added 103 thousand tonnes (up 18.2 percent), the United States added 50 thousand tonnes (up 36.0 percent) and Mexico added 48 thousand tonnes (up 63.2 percent), while Indonesia fell 91 thousand tonnes (down 20.0 percent).

India contributes 43.6 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Türkiye at 19.2 percent and China at 10.1 percent. Türkiye's five-year path runs 200 to 518 to 523 thousand tonnes. Per capita, Guyana's 21.05 kilograms from 17 thousand tonnes lead Bhutan at 7.27 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 3.07 kilograms.

What Does the Other Spices Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Spices, Other recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of spices people actually ate. Spices recorded under separate items, such as pepper, pimento, cloves and vanilla, sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Other Spices Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, India had the largest listed food supply of other spices among the 174 reporters with reported values, at 4,411 thousand tonnes. Nigeria ranked second at 669 thousand tonnes, while Türkiye ranked third at 523 thousand tonnes. Guyana had the highest per-capita other spices food supply at 21.05 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of other spices actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Spices, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 175 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 9,414 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 174 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of the five-year increase comes from India?

India added 734 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, or 43.6 percent of the 1,682-thousand-tonne net increase. Türkiye added 323 thousand tonnes and China added 170 thousand tonnes against Indonesia's 91-thousand-tonne decline.

Why does Guyana lead other spices food supply per person?

Guyana recorded 21.05 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 17 thousand tonnes. Bhutan followed at 7.27 kilograms per person, while India, first by total, recorded 3.07 kilograms.

Is the food supply of other spices the same as spices eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
