The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Sheep and Goat Meat, 2020-2024, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 188 countries; 186 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 annual listed total is 19,272,533 tonnes. The 2024 country list for sheep and goat meat production runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.

China produced 1.72 times as much as India: 5,177,500 tonnes against 3,014,827, while Australia ranks third with 981,652 tonnes, 2,033,175 tonnes behind India. The top two hold 42.5 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 981,652 and 817,144 tonnes respectively.

Sheep and Goat Meat Production by Country in 2024

China was the largest sheep and goat meat producer in the 2024 listed data with 5,177,500 tonnes, followed by India with 3,014,827 tonnes and Australia with 981,652 tonnes. Pakistan ranked fourth with 817,144 tonnes.

China holds 26.9 percent of the listed 2024 total. The top three together hold 47.6 percent of the 19,272,533-tonne listed total.

From 2023 to 2024 the common reporter universe (186 countries with data in both years) moved from 19,243,798 tonnes to 19,272,533 tonnes, a change of 28,735 tonnes (0.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 19,243,859 tonnes (187 reporters) and 19,272,533 tonnes (186 reporters); 1 country reporting in 2023 (61.95 tonnes, Nicaragua) did not report in 2024, while no new reporters joined. India added 284,437 tonnes (up 10.4 percent) and Australia 97,142 tonnes (up 11.0 percent), while China fell 135,100 tonnes (down 2.5 percent) and Türkiye 88,982 tonnes (down 12.7 percent).

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (186 countries with data in both years) rose from 17,388,203 tonnes to 19,272,533 tonnes, a change of 1,884,330 tonnes (10.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 17,402,526 tonnes (188 reporters) and 19,272,533 tonnes (186 reporters); 2 reporters present in 2020 (Palestine, 14,262 tonnes, and Nicaragua, 60.99 tonnes) are absent in 2024, while no new reporters joined. India added 919,087 tonnes (up 43.9 percent) and Australia 308,341 tonnes (up 45.8 percent), while China added 254,400 tonnes (up 5.2 percent).

In the sheep and goat meat production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For sheep and goat meat production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.
