Silicon production by country shows how much silicon is produced in each country, measured in tonnes. The figures refer to silicon production (silicon metal and ferrosilicon combined, measured by silicon content), in line with the underlying sources. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2018-2022, built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 17 countries included in the underlying data during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 15 countries, which produced a combined 9,372,000 tonnes in 2025. The source reports silicon metal and ferrosilicon as two separate measures with separate World totals; the values here combine them to match the earlier series' total basis. Brazil, Bhutan, India, Malaysia, and South Africa appear with 2024-2025 values only, and the United States is listed in the source as withheld (W) and retains its 2022 value (310,000 tonnes) from the earlier series.

Largest Silicon-Producing Countries in 2025

China produced the most silicon in 2025 with 7,500,000 tonnes. Russia ranked second with 455,000, followed by Brazil (350,000), Norway (280,000), Kazakhstan (127,000), Malaysia (120,000), Bhutan (98,000), France (89,000), Iceland (88,000), and India (59,000).

China alone accounted for about 80 percent of the combined country total in 2025, and China and Russia together for about 85 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 89 percent. China's output was about 16.5 times that of Russia. Six countries produced at least 100,000 tonnes in 2025.

Silicon Production Around the World

In Asia, China (7,500,000) leads by a wide margin, ahead of Kazakhstan (127,000), Malaysia (120,000), Bhutan (98,000), and India (59,000). In Europe, Russia (455,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Norway (280,000), Iceland (88,000), France (89,000), Spain (44,000), and Germany (13,000); the United States keeps its earlier value (310,000 tonnes in 2022) and is withheld (W) in the source.

In the Americas, Brazil (350,000) leads, ahead of Canada (57,000). In Africa, South Africa (45,000) is the only listed producer. In Oceania, Australia (47,000) is the only listed producer.

Largest Changes in Silicon Production, 2024-2025

Most listed countries decreased or held their levels. China recorded the largest decline in absolute terms, falling from 7,900,000 tonnes in 2024 to 7,500,000 in 2025 (down 400,000, about 5 percent). Iceland fell from 118,000 to 88,000 (down 30,000, about 25 percent), Russia from 479,000 to 455,000 (down 24,000, about 5 percent), France from 111,000 to 89,000 (down 22,000, about 20 percent), Norway from 300,000 to 280,000 (down 20,000, about 7 percent), Germany from 29,000 to 13,000 (down 16,000, about 55 percent), South Africa from 51,000 to 45,000 (down 6,000, about 12 percent), and Spain from 47,000 to 44,000 (down 3,000).

Brazil (350,000) and Bhutan (98,000) held their levels. The combined country total fell from 9,893,000 to 9,372,000 tonnes (down 521,000, about 5 percent).

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national silicon production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2018-2022. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available. Values refer to silicon production from silicon metal and ferrosilicon combined, measured by silicon content, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports silicon metal and ferrosilicon as two separate measures; the combined approach used here matches the earlier series' total and is measured by silicon content. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The combined country total is not the same as either of the source's two separate World totals. The source lists the United States as withheld (W); its earlier value (310,000 tonnes in 2022) is retained. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
