Skim Milk and Whey Powder Consumption by Country

India led the 2023 table with 423,693 tonnes of skim milk and whey powder food supply, equal to 13.5 percent of the listed total. The United States followed with 382,245 tonnes and China with 289,600, while Belgium recorded the highest figure per person at 19.55 grams per day. The 2023 figures total 3,143,255 tonnes across 162 countries, 161 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

The nearly flat total hides much larger movements underneath: Mexico lost about 77,000 tonnes in the latest year while India added nearly 71,000. Belgium led per person, far ahead of Estonia.

Key Findings

In 2023, India had the largest reported food supply of skim milk and whey powder at 423,693 tonnes, followed by the United States at 382,245 tonnes and China at 289,600 tonnes. Belgium ranked first per person at 19.55 grams per person per day, ahead of Estonia at 17.53 grams and Mauritius at 13.09 grams. The listed total reached 3,143,255 tonnes across the countries with 2023 values. Among 160 countries with values at both endpoints, the total increased 6.5 percent from 2019 to 2023. These figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts and do not measure actual individual intake.

Indonesia placed fourth at 174,220 tonnes, with Algeria fifth at 167,499 and the Philippines sixth at 143,031. Mexico, Italy, Vietnam and Belgium closed the top ten between 83,600 and 130,497 tonnes. The top three held 34.9 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 45.7 percent.

• Mexico falls: down 77,033 tonnes, or 37.1 percent, the deepest latest-year loss.
• India grows: up 70,915 tonnes, or 20.1 percent, widening the lead.
• The Philippines thins: down 48,453 tonnes, or 25.3 percent, slipping to sixth.
• Türkiye multiplies: up 47,023 tonnes from 664, the fastest percentage move.

Mexico and India Cancel Out in Skim Milk and Whey Powder

Mexico lost 77,033 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 37.1 percent to 130,497 tonnes. The Philippines lost 48,453 tonnes, down 25.3 percent. Indonesia shed 33,776 tonnes, down 16.2 percent. The United Kingdom fell 20,172 tonnes, down 35.9 percent. India added 70,915 tonnes, up 20.1 percent. Türkiye added 47,023 tonnes from 664. Belgium added 46,888 tonnes, up 127.7 percent. The United States added 23,320 tonnes, up 6.5 percent. The 161 countries present in both years eased from 3,146,525 tonnes to 3,143,255 tonnes, down 3,270 tonnes, effectively flat, with no entries or exits.

India Drives Five-Year Growth

Between 2019 and 2023, the 160 countries present in both years grew from 2,952,158 tonnes to 3,143,243 tonnes, up 191,085 tonnes, or 6.5 percent. India added 222,108 tonnes, up 110.2 percent, accounting for 116.2 percent of the net gain. Belgium added 72,516 tonnes, up 654.2 percent. Türkiye added 47,679 tonnes from 8. Germany added 38,104 tonnes, up 144.2 percent. Italy added 29,955 tonnes, up 30.0 percent. Mexico lost 76,144 tonnes, down 36.8 percent. Australia shed 40,828 tonnes, down 63.6 percent. The Philippines gave up 35,002 tonnes, down 19.7 percent. One country left with 10,918 tonnes, and one arrived with 13 tonnes.

Belgium Scoops Skim Milk and Whey Powder per Person

Belgium's 19.55 grams a day edged Estonia's 17.53, with Mauritius third at 13.09 and Algeria at 9.94. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines sat fifth at 9.76 grams, with Norway at 9.09 and Nauru at 7.76. Bahrain, Bulgaria and Fiji followed below 7.6 grams. India, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten.

The FAO category covers skim milk and whey powder, reported in tonnes and grams per person per day for each reporting country from 2019 to 2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only.

Türkiye's 7,081.3 percent latest rate divides by 664 tonnes and its 629,016.1 percent five-year rate by eight tonnes. Cuba stopped reporting after 10,918 tonnes in 2019, a mid-table exit without a farewell value.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for skim and whey powder across 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year's value as the base; no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe counts 162 countries minus aggregates, 161 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
