Whole Milk Powder Consumption by Country

Brazil ranked first in whole milk powder food supply in 2023, at 690,490 tonnes, just 13,509 tonnes ahead of India. China placed third with 418,940 tonnes. Across the 175 countries with reported 2023 values, the listed total was 3,985,911 tonnes. Brazil, India and China together accounted for 44.8 percent of that total. Mauritius led on a per-person basis at 15.41 grams per day. The figures describe food available for human consumption, not the amount actually consumed.

Which country has the highest whole milk powder food supply? Brazil ranked first in 2023, with 690,490 tonnes, narrowly ahead of India at 676,981 tonnes. China placed third with 418,940 tonnes. Together, the three countries accounted for 44.8 percent of the 3,985,911 tonnes reported across countries with 2023 values. On a per-person basis, Mauritius ranked first at 15.41 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Mexico placed fourth at 262,858 tonnes, with Algeria fifth at 252,177 and Argentina sixth at 75,009. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Venezuela and Colombia closed the top ten between 61,626 and 74,274 tonnes. The top three held 44.8 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 57.7 percent.

Brazil Narrowly Leads in 2023

Brazil's listed food supply rose by 133,833 tonnes between 2022 and 2023. India recorded an even larger increase of 226,935 tonnes. Iraq added 26,615 tonnes, while Belgium and Vietnam also posted substantial gains from their 2022 levels. China recorded the largest absolute decline, falling by 278,063 tonnes to 418,940 tonnes. Across the 175 countries with values in both years, the total increased by 137,932 tonnes, or 3.6 percent.

India Drives Much of the Five-Year Increase

Between 2019 and 2023, the 172 countries with values in both years recorded a combined increase of 540,559 tonnes, or 15.7 percent. India's listed supply rose from 2,047 tonnes, an increase of 674,934 tonnes over the comparison period. Because its starting value was very small, the percentage increase is less informative than the absolute change. Mexico added 126,716 tonnes and Brazil 67,764 tonnes. China declined by 251,176 tonnes, while Vietnam and Saudi Arabia also recorded decreases. Cuba had a value in 2019 but no later reported values, while three countries entered the comparison group by 2023.

Mauritius Leads on a Per-Person Basis

Mauritius recorded the highest whole milk powder food supply per person in 2023, at 15.41 grams per day. Algeria ranked second at 14.97 grams, followed by Nauru at 13.40 and Mauritania at 13.10. Maldives and Djibouti followed at 12.92 and 12.84 grams, respectively. Kuwait recorded 12.44 grams and Cape Verde 12.36 grams per person per day. New Caledonia and Belarus came next at 9.84 and 9.32 grams, respectively. Brazil led by total volume but did not rank among the top ten countries on a per-person basis.

What the Data Covers

Whole milk powder for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The dataset includes 176 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 175 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. Because starting values for India and Uzbekistan were very small, their large percentage changes should be read alongside the absolute tonnage changes.

Methodology

FAO FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts report whole milk powder food supply in tonnes (element 5141) and grams per person per day (element 665) for 2019-2023. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the 175 countries with reported values, after aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year and five-year comparisons use only countries with values at both endpoints. Percentage changes are not calculated from a zero base. A reported zero is retained as a value, while a blank is treated as missing data. These figures describe food available for human consumption and do not directly measure actual intake.
