Skim Milk of Cows Consumption by Country

Germany recorded the largest food supply of skim milk of cows in 2023, at 4,759,170 tonnes, accounting for 16.3 percent of the annual listed total. Italy ranked second with 1,850,000 tonnes, followed by France with 1,669,999 tonnes. Per person, Luxembourg ranked first. The 2023 figures total 29,147,677 tonnes across 150 countries, 148 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

Germany ranked first in total skim milk of cows food supply in 2023, with 4,759,170 tonnes, or 16.3 percent of the annual listed total. Luxembourg ranked first per person, at 206.69 grams per person per day, followed by Portugal at 191.77 grams. These figures measure food available for human consumption rather than the amount people actually drank.

Russia placed fourth at 1,606,057 tonnes, with Canada fifth at 1,555,041 and Tanzania sixth at 1,323,213. Iran, Brazil, Spain and Türkiye closed the top ten between 902,884 and 1,223,972 tonnes. The top three held 28.4 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 39.2 percent. Germany had the highest listed food supply, while Luxembourg had the highest per-capita food supply.

• Italy adds 250,000 tonnes, up 15.6 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• Germany adds 164,380 tonnes, up 3.6 percent, widening the lead.
• Iran adds 147,870 tonnes, up 13.7 percent, firming seventh place.
• Saudi Arabia adds 143,684 tonnes, up 37.9 percent, the fastest rate in the top ten.

Italy Records the Largest Annual Increase

The 148 countries present in both years rose from 28,209,413 tonnes to 29,147,677 tonnes, up 938,264 tonnes, or 3.3 percent, with one departure holding nothing and no arrivals.

Germany Leads the Five-Year Increase in Skim Milk Supply

Between 2019 and 2023, the 145 countries present in both years advanced from 24,976,684 tonnes to 29,128,984 tonnes, up 4,152,300 tonnes, or 16.6 percent. Germany added 2,572,170 tonnes, up 117.6 percent, accounting for 61.9 percent of the net gain. Italy added 640,000 tonnes, up 52.9 percent. Tanzania added 338,098 tonnes, up 34.3 percent. Poland added 282,834 tonnes, up 76.2 percent. Brazil added 253,065 tonnes, up 35.1 percent. Kazakhstan added 250,603 tonnes, up 54.3 percent. Türkiye lost 938,302 tonnes, down 51.0 percent. Morocco shed 219,104 tonnes, down 23.3 percent. Two countries left with 11,271 tonnes, against three arrivals with 18,693.

Luxembourg Leads Per-Person Skim Milk Supply

Luxembourg's 206.69 grams a day edged Portugal's 191.77, with Denmark third at 178.81 and Ireland at 166.65. Belarus sat fifth at 156.21 grams, with Germany at 154.22 and Croatia at 148.81. Sweden, Iceland and Moldova followed below 134 grams. Germany ranked first by total volume and sixth per person, at 154.22 grams per day.

What the Skim Milk of Cows Data Covers

Skimmed cow milk for human consumption is counted in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Germany more than doubled over five years while Türkiye halved.

Bhutan fell to reported zeros in 2022 and 2023 from 11,785 tonnes in 2021, so that change merits checking against the source.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for skimmed cow milk across 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; percentage changes are not calculated when the base value is zero. The dataset contains 150 countries after aggregates are removed, 148 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 29,147,677 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
