Solar Capacity by Country

Solar capacity by country measures installed solar power plant capacity for each country, in gigawatts (GW). This covers photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power together. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 208 countries, with 204 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 1,863.37 GW in 2024, up from 1,414.37 GW in 2023.

China (886.66 GW) held nearly half of world solar capacity in 2024 — about 5.0 times the United States (176.68 GW). India (97.38 GW), Japan (91.61 GW) and Germany (89.94 GW) completed the top five.

China accounted for about 47.6% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 57.1%, the top three about 62.3%, the top five about 72.0%, and the top ten about 82.4%.

China added more solar capacity than the United States has installed

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 609.92 to 886.66 GW (+276.74 GW, about 45.4%). The world total rose from 1,414.37 to 1,863.37 GW (+449.00 GW, about 31.7%), so China alone accounted for about 62% of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was Ukraine, falling from 8.06 to 5.50 GW (-2.56 GW, about 31.8%).

China widened an already enormous lead

China (+45.4%), Brazil (+40.0%), India (+33.7%) and the United States (+26.4%) all expanded at double-digit rates, with Germany (+20.1%) close behind. Ukraine's -31.8% was the largest absolute decline in the table. With China adding nearly two-thirds of the net world increase, the ranking order did not change.

Solar capacity more than tripled in five years

Reported world values were 590.91 GW in 2019, 724.74 GW in 2020, 868.47 GW in 2021, 1,067.58 GW in 2022, 1,414.37 GW in 2023 and 1,863.37 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 215.4% above the 2019 level, more than tripling in five years. The pace accelerated sharply after 2022, with the world adding 346.79 GW in 2023 and another 449.00 GW in 2024.

Solar capacity in context

Solar has an unusually large China-US gap: China accounted for 47.6% of global capacity in 2024, compared with 9.5% for the United States, a ratio of 5.0 to one. Its 2024 additions alone (+276.74 GW) exceeded the entire installed solar fleet of the United States. The ranking reflects installed solar capacity, not electricity generated.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual installed solar capacity in gigawatts (GW). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers solar capacity only; the combined solar, tide, wave and fuel-cell series and generation are reported separately in the source.
