Solar Electricity Generation by Country
Solar electricity generation by country measures the amount of electricity generated from solar power in each country, measured in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 110 countries with a reported 2024 value, from 2019 to 2024. The World total stood at 7.2 quad Btu in 2024, up from 5.63 in 2023.
Solar electricity generation measures the electricity produced from solar power, as reported in the EIA dataset.
Solar Electricity Generation by Country
China alone accounted for about 40 percent of the World total in 2024, and China and the United States together for about 55 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 61 percent, the top five for about 70 percent, and the top ten for about 81 percent. China's solar electricity generation was about 2.6 times that of the United States, the second-largest generator.
Countries With the Largest Solar Electricity Generation in 2024
China generated the most solar electricity in 2024 with 2.86 quad Btu. The United States ranked second with 1.10 quad Btu, followed by India (0.46), Japan (0.33), Germany (0.25), Brazil (0.23), Spain (0.19), Australia (0.18), Italy (0.12), and South Korea (0.11).
Solar Electricity Generation Around the World
In Asia, China (2.86) leads by a wide margin, ahead of India (0.46), Japan (0.33), South Korea (0.11), and Vietnam (0.11). In Europe, Germany (0.25) leads, followed by Spain (0.19), Italy (0.12), Türkiye (0.10) and France (0.08).
In North America, the United States (1.10) leads, ahead of Mexico (0.08) and Canada (0.027). In South America, Brazil (0.23) is the largest generator, followed by Chile (0.069) and Colombia (0.017). In Africa, South Africa (0.055) leads, while in Oceania, Australia (0.18) is by far the largest generator. In the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates (0.031) and Israel (0.027) report the largest values in this dataset.
Solar Electricity Generation in the EIA Dataset
Solar electricity generation is reported as a separate electricity generation indicator in the EIA International Energy Statistics. The values on this page refer specifically to electricity generated from solar power and should not be interpreted as total electricity generation from all sources.
Global Structure in This Dataset
Solar electricity generation figures are concentrated among the largest generators: the top five generators account for about 70 percent of World generation in 2024, while the top ten account for about 81 percent. The structure was stable between 2019 and 2024, with China remaining the largest generator in every year shown.
Largest Changes in Solar Electricity Generation, 2023-2024
China recorded the largest increase among the listed countries, rising from 1.99 quad Btu in 2023 to 2.86 in 2024 (up 0.87, about 43.6 percent). United States rose by 0.22, and Brazil by 0.06.
Canada recorded the largest decline, falling from 0.0284 to 0.0268 quad Btu (down 0.0016, about 5.6 percent). Switzerland fell from 0.0206 to 0.0191 quad Btu (down 0.0015, about 7.3 percent), while Japan declined from 0.3326 to 0.3314 quad Btu (down 0.0012, about 0.4 percent). The World total rose from 5.63 to 7.2 quad Btu (up 1.57, about 27.9 percent).
Between 2019 and 2024, China's solar electricity generation rose from 0.76 to 2.86 quad Btu, while the United States increased from 0.43 to 1.10. India rose from 0.16 to 0.46, and Brazil recorded particularly rapid growth from 0.02 to 0.23 quad Btu over the same period.
Total and Ratio Analysis for 2019-2024
The World total for solar electricity generation moved between 2.46 and 7.2 quad Btu in this period. It was 2.46 in 2019, 2.99 in 2020, 3.62 in 2021, 4.55 in 2022, 5.63 in 2023, and then 7.2 in 2024.

Methodology
The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values refer to solar electricity generation, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year as in the source, and 2024 figures are from the INTL.116-12 series where listed. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of individually listed countries may differ slightly from the World total shown in the source because of rounding and differences in the source's aggregation. This page covers solar electricity generation only and does not include other indicators, which are reported separately in the source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest solar electricity generation in 2024 in this dataset?
China had the largest solar electricity generation in this dataset in 2024 with 2.86 quad Btu.
How many countries are included for solar electricity generation in this dataset?
The table covers 110 countries with reported values for 2019-2024 where listed; the source reports the World total as 7.2 quad Btu for 2024.
What does this indicator measure?
It measures solar electricity generation, in quad Btu per year, where the source lists values individually. It is distinct from other indicators which are reported separately in the same tables.
