Soyabean Oil Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 25,187 thousand tonnes of listed soyabean oil food supply in 2023 across 170 reporters with reported values. The United States accounts for 4,650 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of China at 4,273 thousand tonnes and India at 3,117 thousand tonnes. Taiwan records the highest per-capita food supply at 16.50 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
The United States leads the 2023 ranking at 4,650 thousand tonnes, only 1.09 times China at 4,273 thousand tonnes. Taiwan tops the per-capita ranking at 16.50 kilograms per person per year, ahead of Algeria at 15.60 kilograms. In 2023, the United States led listed soyabean oil food supply at 4,650 thousand tonnes, with China second at 4,273 thousand tonnes and India third at 3,117 thousand tonnes. Brazil followed at 2,868 thousand tonnes and Mexico at 721 thousand tonnes. Taiwan's 16.50 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Algeria at 15.60 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 170 reporters with data in both years eased from 25,364 thousand tonnes to 25,187 thousand tonnes, a decline of 177 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent), as falls in Egypt, Pakistan, China, Thailand and Bangladesh outweighed gains in Italy, India and Vietnam. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 7.0 percent, led by India, China and Iran. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of soyabean oil actually eaten. The United States holds 4,650 thousand tonnes, or 18.5 percent of the 25,187-thousand-tonne listed total. China follows at 4,273 thousand tonnes (17.0 percent) and India at 3,117 thousand tonnes (12.4 percent), with Brazil fourth at 2,868 thousand tonnes and Mexico fifth at 721 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters account for 47.8 percent of the listed total, while the top five account for 62.1 percent and the top ten account for 73.9 percent. The gap between first and second is 377 thousand tonnes, just 1.5 percent of the listed total. Among the 170 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 25,364 thousand tonnes to 25,187 thousand tonnes, a decline of 177 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 170 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Egypt fell 198 thousand tonnes (down 31.7 percent), Pakistan fell 190 thousand tonnes (down 42.2 percent), China fell 123 thousand tonnes (down 2.8 percent), Thailand fell 83 thousand tonnes (down 27.7 percent) and Bangladesh fell 57 thousand tonnes (down 14.2 percent), while Italy added 149 thousand tonnes (up 59.4 percent), India added 104 thousand tonnes (up 3.5 percent) and Vietnam added 61 thousand tonnes (up 26.5 percent). For the 167 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 23,545 thousand tonnes to 25,182 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,637 thousand tonnes (7.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 168 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 170; Cuba, with 85 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while the Marshall Islands, Saint Lucia and Türkiye entered with a combined 5 thousand tonnes. India added 454 thousand tonnes (up 17.0 percent), China added 348 thousand tonnes (up 8.9 percent), Iran added 284 thousand tonnes (up 74.2 percent), the United States added 139 thousand tonnes (up 3.1 percent), Germany added 133 thousand tonnes (up 29.9 percent) and Mexico added 122 thousand tonnes (up 20.4 percent), while Egypt fell 277 thousand tonnes (down 39.3 percent) and Pakistan fell 190 thousand tonnes (down 42.2 percent). Pakistan recorded the same 190-thousand-tonne decline in both periods, falling from 450 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 2022 to 260 thousand tonnes in 2023. India contributes 27.7 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by China at 21.3 percent and Iran at 17.3 percent. Per capita, Taiwan's 16.50 kilograms lead Algeria at 15.60 kilograms, while the United States, first by total, records 13.54 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the soyabean oil figure used here covers soyabean oil recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much soyabean oil people actually consumed. Quantities of soyabean oil allocated to other uses are outside this Food element. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, the United States had the largest listed soyabean oil food supply among the 170 reporters with reported values, at 4,650 thousand tonnes. China ranked second at 4,273 thousand tonnes, while India ranked third at 3,117 thousand tonnes. Taiwan had the highest per-capita soyabean oil food supply at 16.50 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of soyabean oil actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Soyabean oil from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe for this item contains 171 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 25,187 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 170 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Soyabean Oil Food Supply at a Glance

Soyabean Oil Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How much larger was United States soyabean oil food supply than China's in 2023?
The United States led in 2023 with 4,650 thousand tonnes against China's 4,273 thousand tonnes, a ratio of 1.09 to one. The 377-thousand-tonne gap equals just 1.5 percent of the 25,187-thousand-tonne listed total.
Which countries have the highest per-capita soyabean oil food supply?
Taiwan recorded 16.50 kilograms per person in 2023, followed by Algeria at 15.60 kilograms. The United States, first by total, ranked fifth at 13.54 kilograms per person.
Is soyabean oil food supply the same as soyabean oil eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
