Soyabeans Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 13,040 thousand tonnes of listed soyabeans food supply in 2023 across 157 reporters with reported values. China accounts for 7,708 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of Indonesia at 2,626 thousand tonnes and Vietnam at 533 thousand tonnes. Belize records the highest per-capita food supply at 9.76 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
China leads the 2023 ranking at 7,708 thousand tonnes, 2.94 times Indonesia at 2,626 thousand tonnes. Belize tops the per-capita ranking at 9.76 kilograms per person per year from just 4 thousand tonnes, just ahead of Indonesia at 9.34 kilograms. In 2023, China led listed soyabeans food supply at 7,708 thousand tonnes, with Indonesia second at 2,626 thousand tonnes and Vietnam third at 533 thousand tonnes. South Korea followed at 309 thousand tonnes and Nigeria at 300 thousand tonnes. Belize's 9.76 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Indonesia at 9.34 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 157 reporters with data in both years rose from 12,934 thousand tonnes to 13,040 thousand tonnes, a gain of 106 thousand tonnes (0.8 percent). China's 460-thousand-tonne increase more than offset declines in Indonesia, Nigeria, Taiwan, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 7.4 percent, with China contributing 85.6 percent of the increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of soyabeans actually eaten. China holds 7,708 thousand tonnes, or 59.1 percent of the 13,040-thousand-tonne listed total. Indonesia follows at 2,626 thousand tonnes (20.1 percent) and Vietnam at 533 thousand tonnes (4.1 percent), with South Korea fourth at 309 thousand tonnes and Nigeria fifth at 300 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters account for 83.3 percent of the listed total, while the top five account for 88.0 percent and the top ten account for 94.4 percent. Only two reporters exceed 1,000 thousand tonnes. Among the 157 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 12,934 thousand tonnes to 13,040 thousand tonnes, a gain of 106 thousand tonnes (0.8 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 157 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 460 thousand tonnes (up 6.3 percent), while Zambia added 48 thousand tonnes (up 123.1 percent) and Afghanistan added 28 thousand tonnes (up 1,400.0 percent). Indonesia fell 156 thousand tonnes (down 5.6 percent), Nigeria fell 121 thousand tonnes (down 28.7 percent), Taiwan fell 79 thousand tonnes (down 27.6 percent), Ethiopia fell 27 thousand tonnes (down 77.1 percent) and Burkina Faso fell 25 thousand tonnes (down 25.5 percent). For the 157 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 12,140 thousand tonnes to 13,040 thousand tonnes, a gain of 900 thousand tonnes (7.4 percent). The 2019 total includes 158 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 157; Cuba, with 7 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 770 thousand tonnes (up 11.1 percent), Nigeria added 210 thousand tonnes (up 233.3 percent), Burkina Faso added 50 thousand tonnes (up 217.4 percent), India added 43 thousand tonnes (up 19.2 percent) and Zambia added 42 thousand tonnes (up 93.3 percent), while Indonesia fell 194 thousand tonnes (down 6.9 percent) and Ethiopia fell 30 thousand tonnes (down 78.9 percent). Afghanistan added 30 thousand tonnes from a zero base. Apart from China, the five-year growth comes in small pieces: Nigeria's 210 thousand tonnes are the next-largest gain, and no other reporter adds more than 50 thousand tonnes. Indonesia's 194-thousand-tonne decline partly offsets the total. Per capita, Belize's 9.76 kilograms from 4 thousand tonnes lead Indonesia at 9.34 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 5.42 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the soyabeans figure used here covers soyabeans recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much soyabeans people actually consumed. Soyabeans crushed for oil or used as animal feed are recorded elsewhere and sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, China had the largest listed soyabeans food supply among the 157 reporters with reported values, at 7,708 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked second at 2,626 thousand tonnes, while Vietnam ranked third at 533 thousand tonnes. Belize had the highest per-capita soyabeans food supply at 9.76 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of soyabeans actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Soyabeans from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe contains 158 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 13,040 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 157 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Soyabeans Food Supply at a Glance

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What explains China's 59.1 percent share of soyabeans food supply?
China recorded 7,708 thousand tonnes of listed soyabeans food supply in 2023, or 59.1 percent of the 13,040-thousand-tonne total. Its value was nearly three times Indonesia's 2,626 thousand tonnes.
Does this table include soyabeans used for oil or animal feed?
No. The table records only soyabeans under the FAO Food element. Beans crushed for oil or fed to animals are recorded elsewhere in the balances and sit outside this figure.
Is soyabeans food supply the same as soyabeans eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
