  • The 2023 listed total was 47,274 thousand tonnes across 148 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 147 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed food supply decreased by 1,437 thousand tonnes, or 3.0 percent.
  • FAO Food Balance food supply represents food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of food actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

In 2023, China had the largest listed supply of sweet potatoes at 24,984 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 2,969 thousand tonnes. Uganda ranked third with 1,587 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, Solomon Islands recorded the highest food supply at 137.76 kilograms per person per year, followed by Rwanda at 80.27 kilograms.

Sweet potato food supply is one of the few measures in this series to decline in both windows. Across the 148 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply fell by 335 thousand tonnes, or 0.7 percent, and across the 147 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023 it fell by 1,437 thousand tonnes, or 3.0 percent. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of sweet potatoes actually eaten.

Sweet Potatoes Consumption by Country in 2023

China had the largest listed food supply of sweet potatoes in the 2023 data with 24,984 thousand tonnes (52.8 percent of the listed total), followed by Nigeria with 2,969 thousand tonnes (6.3 percent) and Uganda with 1,587 thousand tonnes (3.4 percent). Angola ranked fourth with 1,524 thousand tonnes and Tanzania fifth with 1,496 thousand tonnes.

The top three reporters hold 62.5 percent of the listed 2023 total, the top five 68.9 percent and the top ten 81.1 percent of the 47,274-thousand-tonne total. China alone accounts for more than half of the listed total, and all ten largest reporters are in Africa or Asia.

Indonesia Falls 442 Thousand Tonnes as Sweet Potatoes Food Supply Declines 0.7 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 148 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 47,609 thousand tonnes to 47,274 thousand tonnes, a decline of 335 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 47,609 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 47,274 thousand tonnes in 2023, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. Indonesia fell 442 thousand tonnes (down 23.6 percent), the largest movement in the year, while Ethiopia added 279 thousand tonnes (up 31.3 percent), China fell 178 thousand tonnes (down 0.7 percent), the United States fell 131 thousand tonnes (down 13.5 percent), Uganda added 111 thousand tonnes (up 7.5 percent) and Tanzania added 97 thousand tonnes (up 6.9 percent). Rwanda fell 52 thousand tonnes (down 4.4 percent) and Cameroon added 50 thousand tonnes (up 11.9 percent).

Tanzania Falls 1,246 Thousand Tonnes as Sweet Potatoes Food Supply Declines 3.0 Percent Since 2019

For the 147 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 48,711 thousand tonnes to 47,274 thousand tonnes, a decline of 1,437 thousand tonnes (3.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 149 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 148; two reporters with a combined 401 thousand tonnes in 2019 had no reported 2023 value, while one reporter entered with a zero 2023 quantity. Tanzania fell 1,246 thousand tonnes (down 45.4 percent), the largest single decline in the window, and China fell 1,121 thousand tonnes (down 4.3 percent). Against that, Uganda added 559 thousand tonnes (up 54.4 percent), Madagascar added 517 thousand tonnes (up 98.7 percent), Ethiopia fell 426 thousand tonnes (down 26.7 percent), Kenya fell 353 thousand tonnes (down 39.6 percent), the United States fell 343 thousand tonnes (down 29.0 percent) and Angola added 266 thousand tonnes (up 21.1 percent).

Two countries account for the entire net decline: Tanzania and China together subtracted 2,367 thousand tonnes, more than the net fall of 1,437 thousand tonnes, with Uganda and Madagascar adding 1,076 thousand tonnes between them and the remainder coming from smaller declines. The per-capita ranking is concentrated in the Pacific and East Africa rather than in the largest suppliers: Solomon Islands records 137.76 kilograms per year and Rwanda 80.27, while China, which leads the total, records 17.56 kilograms.

What Does Sweet Potatoes Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the sweet potatoes figure used here is the amount recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much sweet potatoes people actually ate. Sweet potatoes are recorded as a separate item from potatoes and from cassava, so the three crops are not combined in this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, China had the largest listed food supply of sweet potatoes at 24,984 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 2,969 thousand tonnes and Uganda at 1,587 thousand tonnes. Solomon Islands had the highest per-capita food supply at 137.76 kilograms per person per year. The dataset contains 150 reporters in the five-year series, with 148 reporting a value for 2023. The figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Food Balances and are not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Sweet potatoes from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 150 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances are compiled from national and other official sources. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 47,274 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 148 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country has the largest sweet potato food supply?

China had the largest listed sweet potato food supply in 2023 with 24,984 thousand tonnes, which is 8.41 times Nigeria's 2,969 thousand tonnes. China's share of the 47,274-thousand-tonne listed total was 52.8 percent, so most other reporters are far smaller in comparison.

Why is sweet potatoes food supply falling?

Listed supply fell 0.7 percent between 2022 and 2023 and 3.0 percent between 2019 and 2023. Tanzania and China together account for 2,367 thousand tonnes of the 1,437-thousand-tonne net decline, and Indonesia fell 442 thousand tonnes in the last year.

Is sweet potato food supply the same as sweet potatoes eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
