Other Sweeteners Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 44,076 thousand tonnes of listed other sweeteners food supply in 2023 across 176 reporters with reported values. The United States accounts for 9,930 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of Russia at 4,286 thousand tonnes and China at 3,294 thousand tonnes. Luxembourg records the highest per-capita food supply at 167.25 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
The United States leads the 2023 ranking at 9,930 thousand tonnes, 2.32 times Russia at 4,286 thousand tonnes, while Luxembourg's 167.25 kilograms per person per year top the per-capita ranking from just 111 thousand tonnes. The top ten reporters hold 59.3 percent of the listed total. In 2023, the United States led listed other sweeteners food supply at 9,930 thousand tonnes, with Russia second at 4,286 thousand tonnes and China third at 3,294 thousand tonnes. Iraq reached 1,632 thousand tonnes and South Korea 1,370 thousand tonnes. Luxembourg's 167.25 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Montenegro at 108.02 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years eased from 44,249 thousand tonnes to 44,076 thousand tonnes, a decline of 173 thousand tonnes (0.4 percent). The United States fell 913 thousand tonnes while Russia, South Korea, India and Cambodia added a combined 1,014 thousand tonnes. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 16.0 percent on surges in China and Iraq. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of sweeteners actually eaten. The United States holds 9,930 thousand tonnes, or 22.5 percent of the 44,076-thousand-tonne listed total. Russia follows at 4,286 thousand tonnes (9.7 percent) and China at 3,294 thousand tonnes (7.5 percent), with Iraq fourth at 1,632 thousand tonnes and South Korea fifth at 1,370 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters hold 39.7 percent of the listed total, the top five 46.5 percent and the top ten 59.3 percent. A long tail of smaller reporters makes up the remaining 40.7 percent. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply moved from 44,249 thousand tonnes to 44,076 thousand tonnes, a decline of 173 thousand tonnes (0.4 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. The United States fell 913 thousand tonnes (down 8.4 percent), while Russia added 382 thousand tonnes (up 9.8 percent), South Korea added 288 thousand tonnes (up 26.6 percent), India added 189 thousand tonnes (up 70.5 percent) and Cambodia added 155 thousand tonnes (up 52.9 percent). China fell 132 thousand tonnes (down 3.9 percent), Guatemala fell 106 thousand tonnes (down 15.9 percent) and Jordan fell 96 thousand tonnes (down 14.3 percent). For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 37,993 thousand tonnes to 44,076 thousand tonnes, a gain of 6,083 thousand tonnes (16.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 16 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 1,620 thousand tonnes (up 96.8 percent) and Iraq added 1,505 thousand tonnes (up 1,185.0 percent from 127 thousand tonnes), together contributing 3,125 thousand tonnes, or 51.4 percent of the increase. The United Kingdom added 616 thousand tonnes (up 110.6 percent), Vietnam added 568 thousand tonnes (up 454.4 percent) and Guatemala added 506 thousand tonnes (up 937.0 percent), while the United States fell 738 thousand tonnes (down 6.9 percent), Thailand fell 547 thousand tonnes (down 36.4 percent) and Mexico fell 444 thousand tonnes (down 36.0 percent). Several reporters multiplied from tiny bases: Iraq rose more than twelve-fold, Guatemala more than ten-fold and Vietnam more than five-fold, which explains how the total grew 16.0 percent while the largest reporter shrank. Per capita, Luxembourg's 167.25 kilograms from 111 thousand tonnes and Montenegro's 108.02 kilograms show how small populations produce extreme values, against 28.91 kilograms in the United States and 2.32 in China. In FAO Food Balances, Sweeteners, Other is a food-supply category within the broader Sugar and Sweeteners group and is reported separately from Sugar (Raw Equivalent). It should not be interpreted as a measure of artificial or zero-calorie sweeteners specifically. The category records food available for human consumption under the Sweeteners, Other classification. This distinction matters when interpreting the figures. The values measure the quantity of other sweeteners available as food supply during the reference year, not the amount people necessarily consumed. The per-capita figure expresses that supply relative to population, so countries with small populations can have unusually high values even when their total quantity is modest. In 2023, the United States had the largest listed food supply of other sweeteners at 9,930 thousand tonnes, followed by Russia at 4,286 thousand tonnes and China at 3,294 thousand tonnes. Luxembourg had the highest per-capita food supply at 167.25 kilograms per person per year. The dataset contains 177 reporters in the five-year series, with 176 reporting a value for 2023. The figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Food Balances and are not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Sweeteners, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 44,076 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Other Sweeteners Food Supply at a Glance

Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as other sweeteners in this table?
The table covers sweetening products recorded by FAO under the Sweeteners, Other category, separate from Sugar (Raw Equivalent). Each is recorded under the FAO Food element in thousand tonnes. Each is recorded under the FAO Food element in thousand tonnes.
Why did Iraq's other sweeteners food supply rise 1,185.0 percent since 2019?
Iraq rose from 127 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 1,632 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 1,505 thousand tonnes. That gain accounts for 24.7 percent of the 6,083-thousand-tonne increase across reporters with data in both years.
Is other sweeteners food supply the same as sweeteners eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
