Ilmenite Production by Country

Ilmenite production by country measures how much ilmenite each country mines, expressed in tonnes. The figures refer to mine production of ilmenite (a titanium mineral concentrate), in line with the underlying sources; rutile is reported separately by the source and is not included here. The statistics combine an Our World in Data series for the earlier years (2020-2024), built from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with 2024 and 2025 estimates taken directly from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. The table covers 14 countries included in the underlying data during the period. USGS reports 2025 estimates for 11 countries, which produced a combined 9,140,000 tonnes in 2025; together with the "Other countries" value of 230,000 tonnes, this totals 9,370,000 tonnes including "Other countries". The USGS World total covers ilmenite and rutile combined, so it is not used as a standalone ilmenite total here. Kenya (190,000, 2022), Vietnam (170,000, 2022), and Brazil (28,000, 2022) retain their last available values from the earlier series.

Largest Ilmenite-Producing Countries in 2025

China produced the most ilmenite in 2025 with 3,200,000 tonnes. Mozambique ranked second with 1,900,000, followed by South Africa (1,300,000), Australia (780,000), Norway (390,000), Senegal (370,000), Canada (360,000), Madagascar (300,000), India (240,000), Ukraine (200,000), and the United States (100,000).

China alone accounted for about 34 percent of the reported 2025 total, and China and Mozambique together for about 54 percent; the top three countries accounted for about 68 percent. China's output was about 1.7 times that of Mozambique. Four countries exceeded 500,000 tonnes in 2025: China, Mozambique, South Africa, and Australia.

Ilmenite Production Around the World

In Asia, China (3,200,000) leads, ahead of India (240,000) and Vietnam (170,000, 2022). In Africa, Mozambique (1,900,000) leads, ahead of South Africa (1,300,000), Senegal (370,000), Madagascar (300,000), and Kenya (190,000, 2022).

In Europe, Norway (390,000) is the largest producer, ahead of Ukraine (200,000). In the Americas, Canada (360,000) leads, ahead of the United States (100,000); Brazil retains an older value of 28,000 tonnes from 2022. In Oceania, Australia (780,000) is the only listed producer.

Largest Changes in Ilmenite Production, 2024-2025

Australia recorded the largest increase, rising from 600,000 tonnes in 2024 to 780,000 in 2025 (up 180,000, about 30 percent). China rose from 3,040,000 to 3,200,000 (up 160,000, about 5 percent), South Africa from 1,260,000 to 1,300,000 (up 40,000), Senegal by 25,000, and India by 10,000. Canada (360,000), Madagascar (300,000), and the United States (100,000) held their levels.

Ukraine recorded the largest decline, falling from 286,000 to 200,000 tonnes (down 86,000, about 30 percent). Norway fell from 432,000 to 390,000 (down 42,000, about 10 percent), and Mozambique from 1,930,000 to 1,900,000 (down 30,000).

Production across the individually reported countries increased by a combined 257,000 tonnes, while the "Other countries" category fell by 102,000 tonnes.

The largest revisions by absolute change were China (revised down from 3,300,000 to 3,040,000 tonnes), Australia (up from 400,000 to 600,000), Ukraine (up from 120,000 to 286,000), Madagascar (up from 240,000 to 300,000), and South Africa (down from 1,300,000 to 1,260,000).

Methodology

The earlier figures come from Our World in Data, which compiles national ilmenite production figures from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries and the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data; USGS data is prioritized, with BGS data used to supplement it. The earlier series covers 2020-2024. The 2024 and 2025 figures are estimates from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 where available; Kenya, Vietnam, and Brazil keep their last available values from 2022. Values refer to mine production of ilmenite, in tonnes, and 2025 figures are preliminary estimates from the source. The source reports production in thousand-ton units for 2024-2025; values here are expressed in tonnes. The source reports the World total for ilmenite and rutile combined; therefore this page presents the sum of the individually reported countries plus the "Other countries" value instead of a separate ilmenite World total. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.
