Uranium production by country measures how much uranium each country produces, expressed in tonnes. The figures follow the definitions used in the underlying sources. The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles them from the BGS World Mineral Statistics. The table below lists 17 countries that record uranium production in the period. 2023 data are available for all 17 countries, which produced a combined 54,437 tonnes in 2023, matching the World total reported in the source. The source data run through 2023, which is the main comparison year.
Countries With the Largest Uranium Production in 2023
Kazakhstan produced the most uranium in 2023 with 21,000 tonnes. Canada ranked second with 11,373, followed by Namibia (6,987), Australia (5,199), and Uzbekistan (3,300). Russia (2,710), China (1,700), Niger (1,000), India (600), and South Africa (275) complete the top ten.
Uranium Production by Country
Among the 17 countries with available 2023 data, Kazakhstan accounted for about 39 percent of their combined production, and Kazakhstan and Canada together accounted for about 59 percent. Only Kazakhstan and Canada produced more than 5,000 tonnes in 2023.
Uranium Production Around the World
In Central Asia, Kazakhstan (21,000 tonnes) is the dominant producer, ahead of Uzbekistan (3,300). In North America, Canada (11,373 tonnes) leads, ahead of the United States (75). In Africa, Namibia (6,987 tonnes) is the largest producer, ahead of Niger (1,000) and South Africa (275).
In Oceania, Australia (5,199 tonnes) is the only listed producer. In Europe, Russia (2,710 tonnes) leads, ahead of Ukraine (100), the Czech Republic (13), and Germany (0). In Asia, China (1,700 tonnes) leads, ahead of India (600), Pakistan (45), and Iran (20). In Latin America, Brazil reported 40 tonnes.
Largest Changes in Uranium Production, 2019–2023
Canada recorded the largest absolute increase, rising from 6,979 tonnes in 2019 to 11,373 in 2023 (up 4,394). Namibia rose from 5,622 to 6,987 (up 1,365), India from 308 to 600 (up 292), and South Africa from 163 to 275 (up 112).
Niger recorded the largest decline, falling from 2,863 tonnes in 2019 to 1,000 in 2023 (down 1,863), with the drop concentrated in 2023, from 2,020 to 1,000. Australia fell from 6,552 to 5,199 (down 1,353), Ukraine from 801 to 100 (down 701), Iran from 71 to 20 (down 51, mostly in 2021), and Germany from 24 to 0 (down 24, reaching zero in 2021).
The period's most dramatic story is Canada's. It fell from 6,979 tonnes in 2019 to 3,613 in 2020, roughly halving in a single year, then rose every year after: 4,768 in 2021, 7,368 in 2022, and 11,373 in 2023, its highest level of the period and about 1.6 times its 2019 level. Kazakhstan, the largest producer, was remarkably stable, ranging between 19,477 and 22,808 tonnes and easing to 21,000 in 2023, its lowest in the period.
Niger's collapse came in one step, in 2023, with output halving from 2,020 to 1,000 tonnes. Ukraine fell to 100 in 2022 and held that level. Germany, whose uranium output came from decommissioning operations, reached zero in 2021 and stayed there, and the United States, after 6 tonnes in 2020, recovered to 75 in 2022 and 2023. World output fell from 54,623 tonnes in 2019 to 47,335 in 2020, then recovered gradually to 54,437 in 2023, nearly returning to its 2019 level.

Methodology
The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national uranium production figures from the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data. Values refer to mine production of uranium, in tonnes, based on mined rather than refined production. The source notes that production from decommissioning operations in France, Germany, and Spain is excluded, and that figures are reported in tonnes of uranium content. The source data run through 2023, which is the main comparison year. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported. According to Our World in Data, the sum of all countries may differ from the World total in certain years, by up to 10 percent, due to discrepancies between the underlying data sources.
