Vegetable Oils Consumption by Country

India and China are separated by 540 thousand tonnes at the top of the vegetable oils table. India held 13,407 thousand tonnes of listed food supply in 2023 against China's 12,867, from a 94,548-thousand-tonne total that grew 9.3 percent over five years. Yemen more than doubled in a single year while Ethiopia, a five-year gainer, slipped back. The per-capita ranking is unusually compressed: the entire top ten fits inside 5.53 kilograms per person per year, led by Italy at 29.31.

Vegetable Oils Consumption

India leads at 13,407 thousand tonnes, 1.04 times China at 12,867, with the United States third at 7,470 and Brazil fourth at 5,115. Per capita, the leaders include several Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries, but the ranking is unusually tight: Italy at 29.31 kilograms from 1,744 thousand tonnes, then the United Arab Emirates at 28.53 and Spain at 27.95 kilograms. India, first by total, records 9.32 kilograms per person.

Vegetable Oils Food Supply at a Glance

  • India had the largest listed vegetable oils food supply in 2023 at 13,407 thousand tonnes.
  • China ranked second at 12,867 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 7,470 thousand tonnes.
  • Italy had the highest per-capita food supply at 29.31 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 94,548 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed vegetable oils food supply increased by 8,013 thousand tonnes, or 9.3 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The vegetable oils aggregate covers the edible oil items in the FAO Food Balances classification, including palm, soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, groundnut, coconut, olive and other oils. Leadership is shared rather than held: the top two differ by barely four percent, and the top ten commands 58.7 percent of the listed total.

India and Indonesia drove the five-year expansion, together contributing 39.2 percent of the net gain, while China and the United States added 663 and 623 thousand tonnes, respectively. Yemen's single-year surge and Ethiopia's five-year climb stand out for pace, and Pakistan is the only top-ten reporter that declined over five years.

India and China Differ by Barely Four Percent at the Top

The 2023 table is led by India at 13,407 thousand tonnes, with China second at 12,867 and the United States third at 7,470. Brazil and Indonesia complete the top five at 5,115 and 4,618 thousand tonnes, respectively. India holds 14.2 percent of the 94,548-thousand-tonne listed total, and its supply is 1.04 times China's.

The top three reporters accounted for 35.7 percent of the listed total, the top five 46.0 percent and the top ten 58.7 percent. The 540-thousand-tonne gap between the leaders is smaller than the supply of most top-ten reporters. Per capita, the ranking compresses further: tenth-placed Israel at 23.78 kilograms sits only 5.53 kilograms below Italy.

Yemen More Than Doubles in a 3.0 Percent Annual Rise

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 91,800 thousand tonnes to 94,548 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,748 thousand tonnes (3.0 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 978 thousand tonnes (up 8.2 percent), India added 852 thousand tonnes (up 6.8 percent), the United States added 288 thousand tonnes (up 4.0 percent), Yemen added 259 thousand tonnes (up 149.7 percent), Iran added 162 thousand tonnes (up 11.9 percent), Pakistan added 159 thousand tonnes (up 5.8 percent) and Vietnam added 124 thousand tonnes (up 27.3 percent), while Brazil fell 241 thousand tonnes (down 4.5 percent).

Yemen's rise from 173 to 432 thousand tonnes is the steepest proportional increase of any reporter between 2022 and 2023, though its absolute contribution ranks fourth. China and India together added 1,830 thousand tonnes, two thirds of the net annual gain, with Brazil the only large reporter moving the other way.

India and Indonesia Drive a 9.3 Percent Five-Year Gain

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 86,535 thousand tonnes to 94,548 thousand tonnes, a gain of 8,013 thousand tonnes (9.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 119 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 1,827 thousand tonnes (up 15.8 percent), Indonesia added 1,312 thousand tonnes (up 39.7 percent), China added 663 thousand tonnes (up 5.4 percent), the United States added 623 thousand tonnes (up 9.1 percent), Ethiopia added 510 thousand tonnes (up 159.4 percent), the Philippines added 401 thousand tonnes (up 71.0 percent) and Nigeria added 310 thousand tonnes (up 11.3 percent), while Pakistan fell 271 thousand tonnes (down 8.5 percent).

India contributes 22.8 percent of the five-year net increase and Indonesia 16.4 percent, so the two together account for 39.2 percent. Ethiopia's climb from 320 to 830 thousand tonnes and the Philippines' from 565 to 966 are substantial proportional gains, while Pakistan stands alone among the top ten as a five-year decliner.

What Does the Vegetable Oils Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Vegetable Oils item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined oils total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the edible oil items, including palm, soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, groundnut, coconut, olive and other oils, and several of those items are also covered in separate articles.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why vegetable oils look concentrated in populous countries by total but spread across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and high-income reporters per person.

Vegetable Oils Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, India had the largest listed vegetable oils food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 13,407 thousand tonnes. China ranked second at 12,867 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 7,470 thousand tonnes. Italy had the highest per-capita vegetable oils food supply at 29.31 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of vegetable oils actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Vegetable Oils from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 94,548 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the vegetable oils aggregate; individual oil items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are India and China so close at the top of the vegetable oils table?

The FAO Food Balances data show India at 13,407 thousand tonnes and China at 12,867 thousand tonnes in 2023, a gap of 540 thousand tonnes and a ratio of 1.04. The two leaders together hold 27.8 percent of the 94,548-thousand-tonne listed total.

Why did Yemen's vegetable oils supply rise 149.7 percent in one year?

Yemen's listed supply rose from 173 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 432 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 259 thousand tonnes. The figures show the size of the increase, but they do not identify what caused it.

Is the food supply of vegetable oils the same as oils eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
