Animal Oils and Fats n.e.c. Consumption by Country
In 2023, Poland recorded the largest listed supply of animal oils and fats n.e.c., at 11,606 tonnes, or about 50.5 percent of the listed total. Slovakia ranked second at 2,571 tonnes, followed by Estonia at 2,411 tonnes and New Zealand at 2,002 tonnes. Estonia ranked first in per-capita supply at 4.83 grams a day, ahead of Slovakia at 1.28 grams. The listed 2023 total was 22,975 tonnes, and 69 of the 79 country rows reported a value for that year, 46 of them above zero. These figures describe food available for human consumption, not the quantity actually eaten.
The three leading national totals together accounted for about 72.2 percent of the listed 2023 supply, so this item is concentrated in a small group of reporting countries. Poland lost 4,328 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 27.2 percent. Portugal lost 1,390 tonnes, down 99.3 percent, to 10.27 tonnes, and Argentina shed 938 tonnes, down 91.3 percent. New Zealand added 1,979 tonnes, up 8,781.6 percent from a 22.54-tonne base, China added 831.42 tonnes, up 1,422.7 percent, and Romania added 303.42 tonnes, up 30.7 percent. The 64 countries with a value in both years fell from 26,613 tonnes to 22,967 tonnes, down 3,646 tonnes, or 13.7 percent, with five countries joining the comparison and Gabon and Saint Kitts and Nevis leaving it. Between 2019 and 2023, the 49 countries with a value in both years rose from 19,093 tonnes to 22,484 tonnes, up 3,391 tonnes, or 17.8 percent. Poland added the most, at 5,728 tonnes, up 97.4 percent. New Zealand added 1,959 tonnes from 42.70 tonnes and China added 855.47 tonnes from 34.38 tonnes. Slovakia lost 2,917 tonnes, down 53.2 percent, Estonia shed 1,089 tonnes, down 31.1 percent, and Lithuania gave up 440.58 tonnes, down 78.5 percent. Twenty countries entered the comparison with 2023 values and no 2019 value, while five left it. Estonia recorded 4.83 grams a day in 2023, ahead of Slovakia at 1.28 grams in second and New Zealand at 1.06 grams in third. Poland sat fourth at 0.82 grams, which is consistent with its position first by total volume but lowest among the leading four per person. The figures cover FAO's Animal oils and fats n.e.c. category in the Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023, where n.e.c. means not elsewhere classified, so the category covers the products assigned to that statistical classification rather than every animal oil or fat product. Tonnage measures the quantity available for human consumption, while grams per person per day provide a population-adjusted measure, and neither one directly measures actual individual intake. Twenty-three countries reported zero tonnes in 2023, including Honduras, which fell from 61.62 tonnes in 2022, and Laos, which fell from 152 tonnes; both drops warrant a source check. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so the ten rows without a 2023 value cannot be read as zero supply. The data come from FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts, using element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day, for animal oils and fats n.e.c. over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 79 country rows, 69 reported a value in 2023 and 46 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 64 countries for 2022-2023 and 49 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing data, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country has the highest animal oils and fats supply per person?
Estonia ranked first in 2023 at 4.83 grams per person per day, ahead of Slovakia at 1.28 grams and New Zealand at 1.06 grams in the reported figures.
Why does Poland account for such a large share of the listed total?
Poland recorded 11,606 tonnes, roughly half of the supply listed across the reporting countries in 2023, well ahead of the next country at 2,571 tonnes.
Which countries recorded the sharpest annual changes?
New Zealand and China reported large increases while Poland and Portugal recorded substantial declines, and those movements describe reported supply without explaining their causes on their own.
Does this dataset measure how much animal fat people eat?
No. It measures food available for human consumption rather than actual individual intake, so the figures describe national availability rather than what each person consumed.
What does n.e.c. mean in this category?
It means not elsewhere classified. The label identifies a specific statistical classification in FAOSTAT and should not be read as covering every animal oil or fat product.
