Whey Cheese Consumption by Country
Spain had the largest listed food supply of whey cheese in 2023, at 27,489 tonnes, followed by Brazil at 26,109 tonnes. Uruguay ranked first in food supply per person, at 2.62 grams per person per day. FAO's figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Iran ranked third at 10,868 tonnes, followed by Belarus at 8,339 and Greece at 7,892. Mexico placed sixth at 7,712 tonnes, with Malaysia seventh at 4,189. Serbia, Uruguay and Canada completed the top ten between 2,711 and 3,716 tonnes. The top three accounted for 53.3 percent of the listed 2023 total, and the top five for 66.7 percent. Malaysia lost 1,740 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, down 29.3 percent to 4,189 tonnes. Qatar lost 776 tonnes, down 24.2 percent. Uruguay shed 654 tonnes, down 16.8 percent. Brazil added 7,218 tonnes, up 38.2 percent. Iran added 5,392 tonnes, up 98.5 percent. Mexico added 4,780 tonnes, up 163.0 percent. The 39 countries with reported values in both years rose from 105,424 tonnes to 119,940 tonnes, up 14,516 tonnes, or 13.8 percent. Seven additional countries reported a combined 1,036 tonnes in 2023, led by Chile. Between 2019 and 2023, the 34 countries with reported values in both years rose from 76,701 tonnes to 119,884 tonnes, up 43,183 tonnes, or 56.3 percent. Spain added 17,489 tonnes, up 174.9 percent. Brazil added 12,002 tonnes, up 85.1 percent. Greece added 6,264 tonnes, up 384.8 percent. Austria lost 1,729 tonnes, down 56.9 percent. Paraguay gave up 1,342 tonnes, down 54.8 percent. Ukraine shed 510 tonnes, down 19.6 percent. Seven countries with 49 tonnes in 2019 were absent from the comparison, while twelve additional countries contributed 1,092 tonnes to the 2023 total. Uruguay ranked first in 2023 at 2.62 grams per person per day, followed by Belarus at 2.51 grams and Qatar at 2.24 grams. Greece placed fourth at 2.11 grams, with Spain fifth at 1.57 grams. Lithuania reported 1.53 grams and Serbia 1.50 grams, followed by Mongolia at 0.84 grams. Spain led by total volume while also ranking among the five highest countries per person. The figures cover whey cheese in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023. The dataset includes 56 countries and areas that reported a value in at least one year; 46 have a reported value for 2023. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas for each year, excluding aggregate rows. Comparisons between years use only countries and areas with values at both endpoints. Ghana, Nepal and Tuvalu each reported zero in 2023 after small 2022 values; reported zeros are retained as supplied and blank cells indicate missing data. The figures describe food available for human consumption, not the quantity people actually ate. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report whey cheese food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.
