Whey; Dry Production by Country
Poland fell from the fourth-largest to the eighth-largest dry whey producer after losing 157,690 tonnes and halving its output. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Whey; dry, 2019-2023, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 46 countries, all of which reported a 2023 quantity, and the 2023 annual listed total is 3,301,784 tonnes. The 2023 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
The United States produced 1.56 times as much as France: 654,308 tonnes against 420,720, while Germany ranks third with 384,460 tonnes, 36,260 tonnes behind France. The top two hold 32.6 percent of the listed total, with third and fourth at 384,460 and 268,500 tonnes respectively. The United States was the largest dry whey producer in the 2023 listed data with 654,308 tonnes, followed by France with 420,720 tonnes and Germany with 384,460 tonnes. Ireland ranked fourth with 268,500 tonnes. The United States holds 19.8 percent of the listed 2023 total. The top three together hold 44.2 percent of the 3,301,784-tonne listed total. From 2022 to 2023 the common reporter universe (46 countries with data in both years) moved from 3,497,186 tonnes to 3,301,784 tonnes, a change of -195,402 tonnes (-5.6 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,497,186 tonnes (46 reporters) and 3,301,784 tonnes (46 reporters); no country exited and no new reporter joined. Poland fell 157,690 tonnes (down 50.0 percent), halving from 315,560 tonnes, while France fell 56,680 tonnes (down 11.9 percent) and the United States added 34,533 tonnes (up 5.6 percent). Between 2019 and 2023, the common reporter universe (45 countries with data in both years) rose from 3,251,428 tonnes to 3,299,878 tonnes, a change of 48,450 tonnes (1.5 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,251,428 tonnes (45 reporters) and 3,301,784 tonnes (46 reporters); no reporter present in 2019 is absent in 2023, while 1 new reporter added 1,906 tonnes (Thailand). The United States added 210,895 tonnes (up 47.6 percent), while Poland fell 130,590 tonnes (down 45.3 percent) and France 107,240 tonnes (down 20.3 percent). Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products production quantity (Element 5510) for item Whey; dry, 2019-2023. For dry whey production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2023 dry whey production ranking and shares use 2023 listed quantities. In the dry whey production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For dry whey production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.

Frequently Asked Questions
How did Poland halve in 2023?
Poland fell from 315,560 tonnes in 2022 to 157,870 tonnes in 2023, a change of -157,690 tonnes (down 50.0 percent). Poland reports in both years, so the halving sits inside the change universe and accounts for most of the 195,402-tonne net fall.
How did the United States grow in both windows?
The United States added 34,533 tonnes (up 5.6 percent) in 2023 and 210,895 tonnes (up 47.6 percent) since 2019. The United States reports in all three endpoint years, so both gains sit inside their change universes.
Who is the new reporter since 2019?
Thailand reported 1,906 tonnes in 2023 and nothing in 2019. Blank cells mean not reported rather than zero, so Thailand sits outside the 2019-2023 change universe with a small listed weight.
