Whey, Dry Consumption by Country
Vietnam narrowly led Italy in dry whey supply in 2023 with 61,342 tonnes, 1.01 times Italy's 60,556. Canada followed at 29,612 tonnes, while Italy recorded the highest food supply per person. The 2023 figures total 261,327 tonnes across 71 countries, 64 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
Key Finding
Vietnam had the highest dry whey food supply in 2023 at 61,342 tonnes, narrowly ahead of Italy at 60,556 tonnes. Italy ranked first per person at 2.79 grams per day, while Vietnam ranked fifth at 1.67 grams. The 64 countries with reported 2023 values supplied a combined 261,327 tonnes.
Argentina placed fourth at 24,527 tonnes, with Egypt fifth at 21,248 and Peru sixth at 10,160. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Nigeria and Chile closed the top ten between 4,010 and 8,600 tonnes. The top three held 58.0 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 75.5 percent. Canada added 14,382 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 94.4 percent to 29,612 tonnes. Vietnam added 13,836 tonnes, up 29.1 percent. Uzbekistan added 1,846 tonnes, up 47.5 percent. Cambodia added 1,219 tonnes, up 110.7 percent. Italy lost 9,690 tonnes, down 13.8 percent. Egypt shed 3,892 tonnes, down 15.5 percent. Nigeria gave up 2,739 tonnes, down 35.1 percent. Ghana fell 2,695 tonnes, down 41.3 percent. The 63 countries present in both years rose from 243,867 tonnes to 259,865 tonnes, up 15,998 tonnes, or 6.6 percent, with one arrival carrying 1,462 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 56 countries present in both years advanced from 210,909 tonnes to 249,865 tonnes, up 38,955 tonnes, or 18.5 percent. Vietnam added 29,971 tonnes, up 95.5 percent, accounting for 76.9 percent of the net gain. Canada added 15,550 tonnes, up 110.6 percent. Argentina added 6,392 tonnes, up 35.2 percent. Chile added 1,864 tonnes, up 86.9 percent. Cambodia added 1,834 tonnes, up 377.6 percent. Italy lost 19,444 tonnes, down 24.3 percent. Egypt shed 1,763 tonnes, down 7.7 percent. Lithuania fell 1,953 tonnes, down 97.7 percent to 46 tonnes. Five countries left with 840 tonnes, against eight arrivals with 11,463. Italy's 2.79 grams a day edged Uruguay's 2.21, with Canada third at 2.06 and Saint Kitts and Nevis at 1.79. Vietnam sat fifth at 1.67 grams, with Argentina at 1.48 and Kazakhstan at 1.16. Jordan, Peru and Bahrain followed below 0.9 grams. Vietnam, first by volume, placed only fifth per person. Dry whey for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Fewer than eight hundred tonnes separate the top two on a 261,327-tonne table. Lithuania's supply fell 97.7 percent from 2,000 tonnes in 2019 to 46.59 tonnes in 2023. Cambodia's 377.6 percent increase was calculated from a low base of 485.77 tonnes, reaching 2,320 tonnes in 2023. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for dry whey across 2019-2023. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe counts 71 countries after aggregates are removed, 64 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total is the sum of the countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who followed Italy in per-person supply?
Uruguay followed Italy in 2023 at 2.21 grams per person per day, with Canada next at 2.06 grams and Saint Kitts and Nevis at 1.79 grams.
Why does Vietnam rank first by tonnes but fifth per person?
Because total supply and per-person supply answer different questions: Vietnam led volume at 61,342 tonnes but sat fifth per person at 1.67 grams, while Italy led per person at 2.79 grams.
How much did Canada add lately?
Canada added 14,382 tonnes, up 94.4 percent in the latest year to 29,612 tonnes, the biggest single latest-year gain among all countries in the file.
Why do some percentage changes look extreme?
Lithuania fell 97.7 percent from 2,000 tonnes in 2019 to 46.59 tonnes in 2023, while Cambodia rose 377.6 percent from 485.77 tonnes, so small starting values produce extreme rates.
Who led five-year growth?
Vietnam alone added 29,971 tonnes, up by 95.5 percent, accounting for 76.9 percent of the net five-year 38,955-tonne gain recorded overall between 2019 and 2023.
