Almonds, Shelled Consumption by Country

The United States had the largest food supply of shelled almonds in 2023, at 504,997 tonnes, or 32.5 percent of the 1,553,585-tonne total and 5.20 times the next country. Morocco came second and Spain third. Morocco, though, led per person, while the United States sat on 4.03 grams a day.

The United States had the largest shelled almond food supply in 2023 at 504,997 tonnes, equal to 32.5 percent of the 1,553,585-tonne total. Morocco ranked first per person at 7.05 grams a day. These figures represent food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten.

China placed fourth at 79,655 tonnes and Germany fifth at 77,713, with Italy sixth (77,434), India seventh (68,012), Algeria eighth (43,519), France ninth (40,490) and Tunisia tenth (30,369). The top three reached 44.0 percent of supply. The volume top ten and the per-person top ten overlap only at Morocco, Spain, the United States, Italy and Tunisia.

Almonds: What Changed Sharply

• Australia's supply dropped 69.6 percent in the latest year, from 73,206 tonnes to 22,291.
• Syria more than quadrupled, from 6,596 tonnes in 2022 to 29,495.
• The United States lost 91,212 tonnes over five years, yet still led by a wide margin.
• Vietnam grew 389.4 percent across the period, from 5,879 tonnes to 28,771.

Almonds in the Latest Year

Among the 167 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply dipped 1.5 percent, from 1,576,696 tonnes to 1,553,568, a loss of 23,128 tonnes. Australia's 50,915-tonne fall and China's 47,540 exceeded the net decline, so gains elsewhere offset them; Syria added 22,899 tonnes, the United States 18,496 and Vietnam 12,294. Spain added 9,980 tonnes and Libya 8,344.

Almonds Over Five Years

Of the 164 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total rose 3.8 percent, from 1,497,002 tonnes to 1,553,568, a gain of 56,565 tonnes. The United States shed 91,212 tonnes, which offset 161.3 percent of that net rise, while Morocco contributed 80.7 percent and India 49.6 percent. Morocco added 45,673 tonnes and Vietnam 22,892. Five countries entered and three left; the newcomers carried 17.63 tonnes in 2023 against 43.23 tonnes for the leavers.

Almonds Per Person

Morocco topped the per-person column at 7.05 grams a day, ahead of Tunisia at 6.82 and Libya at 5.81. Spain (4.64) and the United States (4.03) followed. Libya stands out as the only country in the per-person top three whose volume sits outside the top ten, at 15,498 tonnes.

What the Almonds Table Measures

Shelled almonds form a single FAO item, counted apart from almonds in shell and from other tree nuts. Each value is a reference-year food supply figure rather than a harvest or a sale, and the grams-per-person column restates that same supply across each country's residents.

Where Almonds Supply Moved Most

Australia's fall from 73,206 tonnes in 2022 to 22,291 in 2023 was the steepest in the table. Syria swung the other way, from 6,596 tonnes in 2022 to 29,495. The United States showed the widest gap between the two measures, first by volume at 504,997 tonnes but only fifth per person, because its supply spreads across a large population.

Methodology

Tonnes are FAO's food supply quantity for shelled almonds, from element 5141, and the grams-per-person-per-day column is element 665; both cover 2019 to 2023. A change divides by the earlier year, and a zero base leaves no percentage. Only countries with a value in both years enter a comparison. A reported zero and a blank cell differ and are never treated as equals. The figures record food available for human consumption, not what people actually eat. The table holds 172 countries, with World, regions and the China aggregate removed and China kept as one row; 169 carry a 2023 value. Compiled by StatsGeo from FAO FAOSTAT.
