Animal Fats Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 1,881 thousand tonnes of listed animal fats food supply, 17.6 percent of a 10,708-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. The five-year net gain of 575 thousand tonnes came almost entirely from one reporter: the United States added 623 thousand tonnes while China shrank by 221. Slovakia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 14.99 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Animal Fats Consumption

China leads at 1,881 thousand tonnes, 1.49 times the United States at 1,264. Central European countries occupy the top three per-capita positions: Slovakia at 14.99 kilograms from 83 thousand tonnes, followed by Austria at 12.60 and Hungary at 12.29 kilograms. Neither volume leader appears in the per-capita top ten.

Animal Fats Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed animal fats food supply in 2023 at 1,881 thousand tonnes.
  • The United States ranked second at 1,264 thousand tonnes, followed by Brazil at 991 thousand tonnes.
  • Slovakia had the highest per-capita food supply at 14.99 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 10,708 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed animal fats food supply increased by 575 thousand tonnes, or 5.7 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The five-year change was driven largely by the United States, while China and Russia recorded major declines. The United States added 623 thousand tonnes (up 97.2 percent), worth 108.3 percent of the net gain, while China fell 221 thousand tonnes and Russia 143 thousand tonnes. Brazil added 200 thousand tonnes and France 106 thousand tonnes, partly offsetting the declines in China and Russia.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years eased by 67 thousand tonnes, or 0.6 percent. China, Vietnam, Nigeria and Russia added between 23 and 169 thousand tonnes each, while Belgium, Uzbekistan, the United States and Mexico gave back between 34 and 71 thousand tonnes each. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of animal fats actually eaten.

Animal Fats Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China at 1,881 thousand tonnes, with the United States second at 1,264 and Brazil third at 991. Russia and Germany complete the top five at 493 and 465 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 17.6 percent of the 10,708-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 38.6 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 47.6 percent and the top ten 60.8 percent. The United States nearly doubled from 641 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 1,264 in 2023.

Nearly Flat Year: China Adds 169 Thousand Tonnes as Listed Supply Eases 67 Thousand Tonnes

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 10,775 thousand tonnes to 10,708 thousand tonnes, a decline of 67 thousand tonnes (0.6 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 169 thousand tonnes (up 9.9 percent), Vietnam added 36 thousand tonnes (up 17.4 percent), Nigeria added 28 thousand tonnes (up 39.4 percent) and Russia added 23 thousand tonnes (up 4.9 percent), while Belgium fell 71 thousand tonnes (down 43.6 percent), Uzbekistan fell 53 thousand tonnes (down 46.9 percent), the United States fell 41 thousand tonnes (down 3.1 percent) and Mexico fell 34 thousand tonnes (down 11.7 percent).

United States Adds 623 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 5.7 Percent Since 2019

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 10,133 thousand tonnes to 10,708 thousand tonnes, a gain of 575 thousand tonnes (5.7 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 27 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. The United States added 623 thousand tonnes (up 97.2 percent), Brazil added 200 thousand tonnes (up 25.3 percent), France added 106 thousand tonnes (up 44.4 percent) and Argentina added 75 thousand tonnes (up 48.7 percent), while China fell 221 thousand tonnes (down 10.5 percent), Russia fell 143 thousand tonnes (down 22.5 percent), Myanmar fell 67 thousand tonnes (down 71.3 percent) and Mexico fell 57 thousand tonnes (down 18.2 percent).

The United States contributes 108.3 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Brazil at 34.8 percent. China's 221-thousand-tonne fall is the largest single decline in the window. Per capita, Slovakia's 14.99 kilograms from 83 thousand tonnes lead Austria at 12.60 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 1.32 kilograms.

What Does the Animal Fats Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Fats, Animals, Raw recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of animal fats people actually ate. Rendered fats and oils recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Animal Fats Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed animal fats food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 1,881 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 1,264 thousand tonnes, while Brazil ranked third at 991 thousand tonnes. Slovakia had the highest per-capita animal fats food supply at 14.99 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of animal fats actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Fats, Animals, Raw from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 10,708 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which reporter contributed most to the five-year increase?

The United States added 623 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, or 108.3 percent of the 575-thousand-tonne net increase. Brazil added 200 thousand tonnes and France 106 thousand tonnes against declines in China and Russia.

Why does Slovakia lead animal fats food supply per person?

Slovakia recorded 14.99 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 83 thousand tonnes. Austria followed at 12.60 kilograms per person, while China, first by total, recorded 1.32 kilograms.

Is the food supply of animal fats the same as fats eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
