Barley Exports by Country
Australia leads barley exports, with a 1.15-to-1 quantity ratio over France, down from 1.21 a year earlier. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Barley, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. The table lists 101 countries; 75 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 33.7 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for barley exports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
Australia was the largest barley exporter in the 2024 listed data with 6,447,284 tonnes, followed by France with 5,598,167 tonnes and Ukraine with 3,377,032 tonnes. Germany ranked fourth with 3,315,442 tonnes, ahead of Argentina (2,636,053 tonnes), Canada (2,570,841 tonnes), Romania (2,488,512 tonnes) and Kazakhstan (1,599,807 tonnes). Australia also led on export value at 1,654,580,000 US dollars, followed by France (1,392,085,000) and Germany (690,391,000). Ukraine breaks the pattern that quantity rank dictates value rank: third by quantity at 3,377,032 tonnes, it falls to sixth by export value (557,301,000 US dollars), behind Germany, Canada and Argentina. Its reported trade value per tonne, about 165 dollars, against Australia's 257 and France's 249, shows a unit-value divergence inside the reported trade, with no price claim attached. The top of the table is highly concentrated: Australia exported 1.15 times as much barley as France, while the top three hold 45.8 percent of the listed total, the top five 63.5 percent and the top ten 88.4 percent. Europe accounts for much of the ranking — France, Ukraine, Germany, Romania, Hungary (888,249 tonnes), Bulgaria (859,082 tonnes), the United Kingdom (609,191 tonnes), the Czech Republic (427,027 tonnes), Poland, Lithuania, Denmark and Sweden among them. Argentina and Canada are the main exporters from the Americas in the ranking, while Kazakhstan leads Central Asia, and Türkiye exported 332,975 tonnes (1.0 percent) in thirteenth place. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (68 countries with data in both years) fell from 36,308,426 tonnes to 33,682,937 tonnes, a change of -2,625,489 tonnes (-7.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 36,411,971 tonnes (81 reporters) and 33,683,222 tonnes (75 reporters); the 2024 common-reporter total is 285 tonnes below the listed total. Ukraine added 1,215,063 tonnes (up 56.2 percent), Bulgaria 333,787 tonnes (up 63.5 percent) and Kazakhstan 296,109 tonnes (up 22.7 percent). Türkiye added 257,123 tonnes (from 75,852 to 332,975 tonnes, up 339.0 percent) from a small base. Australia recorded the largest absolute retreat, down 1,832,902 tonnes (down 22.1 percent), followed by France with 1,229,509 tonnes (down 18.0 percent) and Denmark with 603,885 tonnes (down 66.9 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (66 countries with data in both years) rose from 32,482,791 tonnes to 33,682,080 tonnes, a change of 1,199,289 tonnes (3.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 37,568,679 tonnes (79 reporters) and 33,683,222 tonnes (75 reporters); 13 countries reporting in 2020 (about 5.1 million tonnes combined, of which Russia alone reported 4,963,402) did not report in 2024, masking growth among continuing reporters. Australia added 2,189,075 tonnes (up 51.4 percent), Romania 1,179,520 tonnes (up 90.1 percent) and Germany 910,264 tonnes (up 37.8 percent). Ukraine fell 1,669,318 tonnes (down 33.1 percent), France 1,179,991 tonnes (down 17.4 percent) and the United Kingdom 965,741 tonnes (down 61.3 percent). This table sums FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows into yearly reporter totals for item Barley, export quantity and export value, 2020-2024. The barley exports series displays quantities below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals and larger quantities as whole tonnes; its values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 barley exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the barley exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The barley exports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Barley Exports by Country in 2024

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Ukraine rank lower by value than by quantity?
Ukraine placed third by 2024 quantity (3,377,032 tonnes) but sixth by export value (557,301,000 US dollars), behind Germany, Canada and Argentina. The difference reflects Ukraine's lower reported trade value per tonne (about 165 dollars) against Australia's 257 and France's 249. The comparison divides each country's own value by its own quantity for 2024.
How should Türkiye's 339.0 percent rise be read?
Türkiye grew from 75,852 tonnes in 2023 to 332,975 tonnes in 2024, an increase of 257,123 tonnes. The triple-digit percentage mirrors the small starting base; the absolute gain of about 0.26 million tonnes puts it in perspective against million-tonne moves elsewhere in the table.
Why do the headline totals fall while continuing reporters grew?
The 2020 listed total included Russia's 4,963,402 tonnes, but Russia has no reported quantity for 2024, so the totals for the two years are not based on the same reporting universe. Among the 66 common reporters, 2020-2024 trade actually rose 3.7 percent.
Can barley export rank identify the largest producer?
No. The series records reported exports by country, not production, domestic demand, stocks, imports or end use. Export rank is therefore not a measure of the countries growing or consuming the most barley.
