China buys more barley abroad than the next three importers combined. The table below uses FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for Barley from 2020 to 2024, pairing import quantities in tonnes with import values in current US dollars. It covers 155 listed countries, including 104 with a reported 2024 quantity, and the listed 2024 total is about 33.6 million tonnes.

Barley Imports by Country in 2024

China was the largest barley importer in the 2024 listed data with 14,239,729 tonnes, followed by Saudi Arabia with 3,608,007 tonnes and the Netherlands with 2,635,484 tonnes. Belgium ranked fourth with 1,696,391 tonnes, ahead of Spain (1,591,114 tonnes), Germany (1,235,333 tonnes), Japan (1,169,541 tonnes), Brazil (937,096 tonnes) and Italy (773,677 tonnes). China also led on import value at 3,793,730,000 US dollars, with the top five in the same order on both measures.

China's 2023-2024 gain of 2,917,536 tonnes stands at 506 percent of the common-universe net gain of 576,468 tonnes. China's increase was larger than the net gain because declines in Spain, Türkiye, Thailand and other countries offset much of its growth.

China holds 42.4 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 3.95 times Saudi Arabia's share; the top three together hold 61.0 percent, the top five 70.8 percent and the top ten 84.6 percent. European buyers cluster through the middle of the ranking — the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Portugal (472,227 tonnes), Denmark (328,214 tonnes) and Romania (296,606 tonnes) — while Japan led imports in Asia-Pacific, and Brazil and Colombia were among the largest buyers in the Americas; Türkiye took 159,678 tonnes.

Barley Import Moves Between 2023 and 2024

Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (99 countries with data in both years) rose from 32,979,754 tonnes to 33,556,222 tonnes, a change of 576,468 tonnes (1.7 percent). The totals listed for each year were 38,206,556 tonnes (137 reporters) and 33,586,234 tonnes (104 reporters); 38 countries reporting in 2023 (about 5.2 million tonnes combined, led by Tunisia with 1,430,368 and Morocco with 1,124,162 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Beyond China and Saudi Arabia, Brazil added 320,908 tonnes (up 52.1 percent), Ireland 241,319 tonnes (up 84.0 percent) and the Netherlands 146,330 tonnes (up 5.9 percent). Spain recorded the largest absolute retreat among continuing reporters, down 1,769,411 tonnes (down 52.7 percent), followed by Türkiye with 1,297,684 tonnes (down 89.0 percent) and Thailand with 612,508 tonnes (down 94.1 percent).

Barley Imports in 2024 Against 2020

Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (101 countries with data in both years) rose from 25,957,584 tonnes to 33,586,102 tonnes, a change of 7,628,518 tonnes (29.4 percent). The totals listed for each year were 32,139,727 tonnes (139 reporters) and 33,586,234 tonnes (104 reporters); 38 countries reporting in 2020 (about 6.2 million tonnes combined, led by Iran with 1,864,909 and Morocco with 1,126,336 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Spain added 1,207,900 tonnes (from 383,214 to 1,591,114 tonnes, up 315.2 percent) from a modest base, alongside Saudi Arabia with 709,580 tonnes (up 24.5 percent). Thailand fell 755,738 tonnes (down 95.2 percent) and Türkiye 729,641 tonnes (down 82.0 percent).

Methodology

Yearly reporter totals in this table sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Barley, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. Displayed quantities keep two decimals below 1,000 tonnes and whole tonnes above; values are full current US dollars, unadjusted for inflation. The ranking and all shares rest on 2024 listed quantities. For barley imports, a zero indicates a reported zero quantity, whereas an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Change calculations admit only countries reporting quantities in both compared years, while entering and exiting reporters are quantified on their own lines. Partner-sourced gap filling and food-aid additions may apply, and bilateral pairs are not fully reconciled, so an export record and its mirror import can disagree.
