Renewable and Other Energy Production by Country
Renewable and other energy production by country measures primary energy from renewable and other non-fossil, non-nuclear sources for each country, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. This is the non-nuclear component of the EIA's primary-energy category for nuclear, renewables and other sources, covering hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and other sources included in the EIA series. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 211 countries, with 211 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 45.4301 quad Btu in 2024, up from 42.3785 quad Btu in 2023.
China (13.2751 quad Btu) led in 2024, about 1.5 times the United States (8.9064 quad Btu). Brazil (3.6493 quad Btu), India (1.5739 quad Btu) and Canada (1.5048 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 29.2% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 48.8%, the top three about 56.9%, the top five about 63.6%, and the top ten about 73.6%. China was responsible for most of the year's increase, adding 2.0026 quad Btu to reach 13.2751 quad Btu, 17.8% above its 2023 level. World production increased by 3.0516 quad Btu, or 7.2%, meaning China's increase represented about 66% of the global gain. Indonesia moved sharply in the other direction, dropping from 0.8366 to 0.3751 quad Btu (-55.2%), an unusually large one-year change that should be treated cautiously. China, the United States and Brazil all increased production from 2023, while India and Japan moved in the opposite direction. The United States rose 5.1% and Brazil 8.8%, compared with a 17.8% increase for China. India declined 5.5%, while Japan fell 12.1%. Reported world values were 34.9579 quad Btu in 2019, 36.1297 quad Btu in 2020, 38.0927 quad Btu in 2021, 40.7327 quad Btu in 2022, 42.3785 quad Btu in 2023 and 45.4301 quad Btu in 2024. Production ended about 30.0% above the 2019 level, with growth in every year. The six-year series shows steady growth in reported production, but it does not identify which countries drove the increase in each year. At 45.4301 quad Btu, renewable and other energy production exceeded nuclear primary energy production (28.3862 quad Btu) by about 60%. China and the United States together account for nearly half of the world total, yet the top ten leave over a quarter to the rest. The ranking is based on primary energy expressed in quad Btu rather than electricity generation in kilowatt-hours, so countries can rank differently here than in electricity-only tables. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy production from renewable and other sources, excluding nuclear and fossil fuels, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. Single-year breaks of unusual size — such as Indonesia's 2024 fall — are reported as recorded, without adjustment or explanation. This page covers renewable and other energy production only and does not include nuclear, fossil sources or consumption, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries lead renewable and other energy production?
China (13.2751 quad Btu) and the United States (8.9064 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Brazil (3.6493 quad Btu), India (1.5739 quad Btu) and Canada (1.5048 quad Btu).
Why did China grow so much in 2024?
China rose from 11.2725 to 13.2751 quad Btu (+2.0026, about 17.8%), about 66% of the world increase. The data records the increase but does not identify its specific causes.
What happened to Indonesia?
Indonesia fell from 0.8366 to 0.3751 quad Btu (-0.4615, about 55.2%) in 2024. Such a sharp single-year break is unusual and merits caution; the source offers no explanation.
Is this the same as renewable electricity?
No. This page reports renewable and other energy production as primary energy in quad Btu. Renewable electricity generation is reported separately in kilowatt-hours.
